Arms Importation Slows Our Response To Insecurity – DICON

In the ongoing battle against insecurity in Nigeria, Major General Aniedi Edet, the Director General of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), highlighted a critical obstacle. He emphasized that the agency’s reliance on imported raw materials for arms and ammunition production has significantly hampered its response to security challenges.

Speaking to reporters during his visit to the National Metallurgical Development Centre (NMDC) in Jos, Plateau State, Gen Edet underscored the detrimental impact of foreign sourcing on operational efficiency. He remarked that delays in material procurement from overseas suppliers have impeded their ability to address security threats nationwide swiftly.

“While DICON plays a crucial role in equipping our armed forces and security agencies, our dependence on imported raw materials has been a major setback,” Gen Edet stated. “The time-consuming nature of international deliveries undermines our agility in responding to insecurity.”

However, there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon. Gen Edet revealed plans to pivot towards domestic sourcing in 2024, leveraging the abundant resources available at NMDC. He expressed confidence in the centre’s capacity to provide essential materials such as lead, copper, and brass for arms production.

Echoing Gen Edet’s sentiments, Professor Linus Asuquo, the Director General of NMDC, emphasized the significance of collaboration in bolstering national security. He asserted that the partnership between DICON and NMDC is both timely and pivotal for ensuring peace and stability in the country.

“This collaboration marks a significant step towards self-reliance and enhanced security,” Professor Asuquo remarked. “With adequate funding, we can harness our domestic resources to fortify our defence capabilities, heralding a new era of security in Nigeria.”
