Anyaoku: Current Constitution Inadequate for Nigeria’s Challenges

Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, is sceptical about Nigeria’s ability to tackle its pressing economic and security challenges under the current constitutional framework and governance structure.

Speaking during an interview at his Obosi village, Anambra State residence, Anyaoku emphasized the nationwide scope of issues such as poverty, insecurity, and crumbling infrastructure. He highlighted the disparity between the present constitution and the one negotiated by the country’s founding fathers, suggesting a return to the original principles for effective governance.

He said the present constitution was a departure from the one the country’s founding fathers negotiated and agreed upon.

“I am on record for saying that these challenges cannot be effectively addressed under the constitution and governance system we have at the moment.

“We cannot effectively address these challenges that have assumed a nationwide dimension, especially insecurity which has pervaded the Northern part of the country and other communities,” Anyaoku said.

“The constitution for a pluralistic state as Nigeria; we have to return to those principles of the constitution as earlier agreed by our founding fathers.

“Until we do that, I am afraid that we cannot effectively deal with the nation’s challenges,” he stated.

Regarding the sit-at-home order issued by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Anyaoku criticized its detrimental impact on the economy of the South East region. He attributed the order to the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, urging authorities to address the root cause to mitigate further disruptions.

In a related development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu emphasized the importance of perseverance and patriotism in nation-building during his visit to the National Museum of Qatar. Reflecting on Nigeria’s journey, Tinubu acknowledged the need for continued efforts to document and preserve cultural heritage, drawing parallels with Qatar’s commitment to showcasing its rich history.

While commending Qatar’s achievements, Tinubu emphasized the enduring significance of nationalism and patriotism in navigating nations’ challenges. He underscored the importance of continuous learning and adaptation in addressing evolving complexities.
