In Ikpeshi, in the Akoko-Edo local government area of Edo state, two riot policemen were beaten to death and two others were injured by a mob.

The protests were sparked by a car accident involving a Toyota Hilux owned by escort-duty police officers that struck a motorcycle in the convoy of Emmanuel Agbaje, a former member of the Edo House of Assembly, killing the rider and her child.

Sources said that Ikpeshi youths overran and severely battered the two police officers at the Edo State Security Vigilance Network headquarters, where they were transported.

However, two other policemen were rescued by the vigilance members, and their rifles were recovered.

The rescued officers are currently undergoing treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Edo.

The four policemen were from Police Mobile Force (PMF) 19, Port Harcourt in Rivers State.

Chairman of Akoko-Edo local government council, Tajudeen Alade, who condemned the activities of Ikpeshi’s youths, declared that the persons involved would be identified, arrested and prosecuted, to serve as a deterrent to other errant youths.

Edo Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Chidi Nwabuzor, a Superintendent of Police (SP), also confirmed the incident
