Luis Rubiales, the former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), was arrested yesterday in connection with a corruption investigation.
He was detained from the Dominican Republic upon his arrival in Madrid but was released shortly afterwards.
Rubiales is suspected of involvement in receiving illegal commissions during negotiations for a lucrative deal to host the Spanish Super Cup competition in Saudi Arabia.
Last month, police conducted a search of Rubiales’ home in the Dominican Republic. Additionally, searches were carried out at the football federation headquarters, leading to multiple arrests.
In a separate legal matter, Rubiales is also facing trial for sexual assault. This charge stems from an incident where he kissed player Jenni Hermoso on the mouth following last summer’s World Cup final.
