Gerald Irona, a former deputy governor in Imo, has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He announced his resignation in a letter to the PDP ward chairman in Oguta, Oguta LGA of the state, citing dissatisfaction with the party’s current situation as his reason for leaving.

Lawman Duruji, a former speaker of the Imo state house of assembly, has also quit the party.

Others who have also left the opposition party in Imo include Nze Biaduo, the state organizing secretary; Pascal Uzor, vice-chairman (Owerri zone); and Charles Awurum, a Nollywood actor.

These politicians are the latest in a wave of defections that have impacted the PDP in the southeast state.

On Tuesday, Emeka Ihedioha, a former gubernatorial candidate of the party in the state, resigned from the PDP.

Ihedioha cited the party’s failure to provide “credible opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC)” as his rationale for departing the PDP.

Following Ihedioha’s resignation, numerous party members in Imo began to defect from the PDP en masse.
