President Joe Ajaero and Mr. Fetus Osifo jointly addressed the issue during the 2024 Workers’ Day in Abuja, expressing deep concern over the nation’s faltering power supply, a hindrance to economic progress.
They emphasized the critical role of energy in driving economic growth and highlighted the dire consequences of mismanagement in the sector.
“The crux of our national dilemma lies in our inability to efficiently manage our energy resources for the benefit of our people,” stated the union leaders.
While acknowledging the significance of oil and gas, they underscored that power, irrespective of its origin, remains pivotal for economic revitalization.
The unions stressed the urgent need for collaborative efforts between the government and citizens to devise effective energy frameworks. They emphasized the long-standing issues plaguing the power sector, persisting even a decade after privatization.
“The root causes are evident. When the sellers become the buyers, the cycle of challenges in the power sector perpetuates,” they remarked.
Furthermore, the unions condemned the imposition of inflated tariffs on consumers, labelling estimated billing as exploitation and daylight robbery.
The NLC and TUC called for immediate action to address these pressing concerns, advocating for a fair and sustainable energy system that benefits all Nigerians.
