The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has urged the Federal Government to address the plight of Nigerian workers with the same urgency it used to approve a 300% pay increase for judicial officers. The NLC expressed this sentiment through a Thursday post on its official X handle.
“See the speed of approval. Why not use the same speed for Nigerian Workers?? The last minimum wage Act has expired since April. #WE DEMAND A LIVING WAGE NOW!” the post read.
This call for action follows the Senate’s June 5 approval of a bill that grants a 300% salary increase for judicial officers at both federal and state levels. The Senate passed the report presented by the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights, and Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Mohammed Tahir Monguno (APC-Borno North).
The approval came after considering and adopting an executive bill transmitted by President Bola Tinubu. This bill seeks to prescribe improved salaries, allowances, and other fringe benefits for judicial officers and workers.
The NLC’s appeal highlights the pressing need for a living wage for all Nigerian workers, emphasizing that the Minimum Wage Act has expired and requires urgent revision and implementation.
