- The government said it acknowledged the current economic situation in the country had also taken into consideration the ultimate aim of the recruitment exercise.
Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun state says he has directed a total refund of recruitment fees paid by applicants for the state’s civil service positions.
In a statement on Thursday, Tokunbo Talabi, secretary to the state government, said the state government acknowledged the nation’s economic challenges.
Talabi said it aligned the recruitment process to create jobs and ease citizens’ hardships.
“These fees are charged by the civil service commission on behalf of third-party independent examiners who administer and supervise the Computer Based Test (CBT) ,” the statement reads.
“The aim is to alleviate the suffering of the citizens and create employment in the state.
“This necessitates the directives to immediately refund fees paid along with a waiver for any new applications.”
The governor’s directive came on the heels of Omoyele Sowore, presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC) in the 2023 election, calling for a protest in Abeokuta, the state capital.
On Wednesday, Sowore criticized Abiodun on his X page, condemning the fee as extortion,
He said that it’s unjust to charge unemployed youths for job applications, which further burdens those who are already struggling financially.
