The Federal Government, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi), has begun distributing auto gas conversion kits to various states in Nigeria. These kits, loaded from a NIPCO warehouse in Ibafo along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, are being sent to states such as Abuja, Kaduna, Lagos, and Ogun.
This initiative is part of the government’s efforts to offer a cheaper and cleaner alternative to petrol, especially after the price surged to as high as N900 per litre. Under the initiative, CNG will be sold at N230 per litre, offering significant cost savings for Nigerians, particularly those reliant on transportation for their livelihood.
The PCNGi, launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, aims to distribute around 10,000 conversion kits to convert 1 million vehicles to CNG. These kits will be provided free of charge, along with free installation, and will target commercial vehicles involved in transporting people, food, and goods. The goal is to complete the rollout over the next 18 months.
This move supports the government’s push for energy diversification and provides immediate financial relief to Nigerians. Engineer Moses Onate, overseeing the loading process, emphasized that CNG is cheaper than Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) and more environmentally friendly, extending the lifespan of vehicles.
Nigerians are encouraged to take advantage of the initiative to reduce the cost of transportation, as PMS now exceeds N1,000 per litre.
