Ali Ndume, lawmaker representing Borno South, has urged the Nigerian government to probe allegations made by US Congressman Scott Perry.
Recently, Perry alleged that USAID indirectly funds terrorist groups, including Boko Haram.
In an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Ndume emphasised that Perry’s claim should not be dismissed.
Ndume urged the government, particularly the National Assembly, to investigate and verify the authenticity of the accusations.
The senator expressed concerns that foreign humanitarian organizations in Nigeria’s North-East might unintentionally aid terrorist groups.
Boko Haram’s attacks have extended beyond the North-East, Ndume noted, citing past bombings in Abuja.
Ndume recalled warnings from security agencies and the Borno State government about NGOs operating in the region.
He mentioned a raid on a USAID office in Maiduguri and investigations into NGOs providing potentially harmful training.
Ndume voiced frustration with Nigeria’s reliance on foreign aid despite its resources.
Nigeria should provide aid to other countries, not depend on external assistance, Ndume argued.
He emphasised the need for improved leadership to harness Nigeria’s potential and achieve self-sufficiency.
