- Aghedo vowed to deliver on constituency projects and drive youth-focused policies if elected into the House of Representatives.
- Edo aspirant hailed governor’s achievements, pledges to expand human capital and infrastructural development in the constituency.
The All Progressives Congress on Monday commenced the sale of nomination and expression of interest forms for the upcoming National Assembly bye-elections.
The exercise, which began at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, comes ahead of the August 16 bye-polls scheduled across 12 states.
The elections are being held to fill vacant legislative seats created by the death or resignation of lawmakers who left office to pursue executive positions.
An aspirant for Ovia South-West/North-East Federal Constituency, Oscar Aghedo, promised quality representation with a focus on infrastructure if elected.
Aghedo made the pledge while addressing journalists shortly after obtaining his nomination and expression of interest forms.
“Today is a great day for me, having purchased these forms to run for the Federal House of Representatives for Ovia South-West/North-East Federal Constituency,” he said.
“My intention to represent my people is to make good laws for our country and to ensure proper representation, especially in the area of infrastructural development.”
“I assure you that I will make my people proud. Some of my constituents are here with me, and I sincerely appreciate them for their support so far.”
He appealed to the National Working Committee of the APC to conduct credible and transparent primaries on July 19.
He said if elected, he would ensure the implementation of constituency projects and prioritise youth and citizens’ empowerment.
“The immediate past lawmaker, who is now the Edo deputy governor, had done remarkably well in infrastructure development.”
“I will not just build on that but will give priority to human capacity development.”
Aghedo described the governor of Edo state as a father figure and praised his performance in office.
“By the grace of God, I have the blessings of God, the governor’s support, and the mandate of my people.”
“I have made several contributions to my constituency and my community. That is why they believe in me, and I have a lot to offer if elected in office.”
He added that youth and women’s empowerment, as well as support for the less privileged, would be central to his legislative agenda.
“Keeping the youth meaningfully engaged will reduce the crime wave and other social vices. We must create avenues to keep them productive and focused.”
“Fortunately, insecurity in my constituency is currently low, but we must not relax; we will work to keep it at the barest minimum.”
Also at the secretariat was Yakubu Waziri, an aspirant for Chikun/Kajuru Federal Constituency in Kaduna State.
He noted that the area had long battled insecurity but was now witnessing peace due to the intervention of president Bola Tinubu and the governor of Kaduna state.
“We are not just experiencing relative peace; we are enjoying permanent peace, to the glory of God,” he said.
He promised to focus on security and youth empowerment if given the mandate.
Waziri said he was confident going into the polls and believed divine favour and popular support would give him victory.
“I have God on my side and the support of the people as well as the governor,” he said.
