Dr Okezie Emenike,  an Abuja based  physician  on Sunday in Abuja said overweight or underweight men and women suffer from a higher incidence of infertility due to hormonal imbalance.

Emenike made the disclosure in an in interview with the the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.

He added that severe obesity in men affects fertility associated with imbalances in hormones that regulates sperm production.

According to him, in many cases, overweight or underweight women have hormonal disorders, which can cause them to either ovulate infrequently or not ovulate at all, leading to infertility.

“Being underweight or overweight can have negative effects on a man’s sperm, and it can kill a couples sex life because weight problems can affect a man’s libido and performance

“Generally, underweight patients can be encouraged to gain more weight, and this alone often increases their fertility significantly, or make hormonal therapy more successful.

“Overweight patients who undergo significant weight loss may ovulate without the need for fertility medications,” he said.

He, therefore, encouraged couples with fertility problems to maintain an ideal body weight for best outcome during fertility therapy.
