A 25-year-old pedestrian has been crushed to death on his way to buy alcohol, early this morning. According to reports, officers were called out to the scene at Verulam – KZN, South Africa, where the accident occurred.

Upon arrival, the body of the critically injured man was found lying on the side of the road. He had sustained life threatening injuries and died at the scene.

An extensively damaged VW Polo was found several meters away from the point of impact. The driver sustained minor cuts and did not require medical assistance.

The deceased’s brother who witnessed the incident informed Reaction Officers that the lived at informal settlement on Old Main Road in Canelands.

Shortly before the accident the deceased, his older brother and their cousin decided to purchase alcohol from a bottle store in Verulam. The three crossed the north bound lane of the R102 and were in the process of crossing the south bound lane when the pedestrian was struck by the driver of the VW Polo GTi.

According to a motorist who also witnessed the incident, the deceased suddenly ran onto the road giving the driver of the VW Polo very little time to react. He had been carrying two crates filled with empty beer bottles on either shoulder which may have hampered his visibility.

Several residents of the informal settlement arrived on scene and expressed their anger at the rising death toll on that particular stretch of road.
