The National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council is planning to introduce emergency lines for the public to report errant drivers.

State chairman of the union Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, (a.k.a MC Oluomo) stated this during the inauguration of the state executives on Friday.
The inauguration was carried out by the National President Tajudeen Ibikunle Baruwa at Agege, Lagos.

Akinsanya said the interests of transport workers would be protected.

He promised to ensure commuters’ safety, timely and affordable transport fare.

According to him, part of his agenda was to see commercial bus drivers obey the rules and regulations of the Lagos State Traffic Law and anyone caught fomenting trouble or extorting passengers will face the wrath of the law.

He said: “I will put an end to the issue of drivers drinking before driving and ban the selling of alcohol at the park.

“We will introduce emergency lines for people to have access to the union and report the misconduct of members of the union.

“Every local government will have an NURTW call line, where Lagosians can make suggestions, complain and report the misconduct of our members or any issue concerning the union. Immediately, we receive the call, I assure that we will spring into action.”

He vowed not to allow rascal activities during his tenure, adding that henceforth, peace and harmony will be maintained in the state.

“There is no rancour in the NURTW, no more fracas among us, all members of the union will work in unison,” he said.

The Deputy State Chairman, Alhaji Sulaimon Obiyejo Akakudeti, said the newly constituted executives have in place numerous projects that will enhance the Lagos transport system and part of the agenda is to create awareness on the danger of taking alcoholic.

“We are going to organise a workshop, which will educate motorists on safety tips,” he said.

He urged Lagosians to support the union “because we cannot do it alone. If any of our members misbehave, they should contact the state council and such person will be disciplined.”

He said the union has successfully eliminated thieves, pocket pickers at bus-top.

‘The issue of stealing, pick-pocketing has reduced drastically; you cannot hear issues of stealing in packs again. Even if commuters misplace their belongings, immediately they report at the pack, their property will be handed over to them,” he said.

He said the union is trying its possible best to reduce transport fare and ensure that buses are available at the park.

“We are doing a lot to ensure bus fare is reduced and also talking to our members treat the passengers with respect,” he said.
