Two months after yet-to-be identified gunmen kidnapped two policemen in Andoni local government area of Rivers State, the two police officers have regained their freedom.

This was disclosed by the Police Public Relations in the state, Nnamdi Omoni in a statement released to newsmen on Thursday.

WITHIN NIGERIA had earlier reported that unknown gunmen have reportedly kidnapped two officials of the Rivers State Police Command at Ngor, Headquarters of Andoni Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Omoni disclosed that the abducted officers identified as Godwin Anwuri, an assistant superintendent of police and Gift Ojimini, a sergeant were rescued in the early hours of Thursday.

Omoni said their abductors released them following intense pressure by the command’s tactical unit, complemented by support from the locals.

Omoni further revealed that the police officers are currently receiving medical attention.

“Meanwhile, the manhunt for their abductors is still on, as we appeal to the public to assist us with credible information that can lead to their arrest,” Omoni said.

He said Mustapha Dandaura, the state commissioner of police has reassured residents of the state that he is poised to deal with “all criminal elements” in the state and restore sanity ultimately.

The high rate of insecurity in Rivers has been a source of concern.

Earlier in the day, Amnesty International said its finding showed that at least 60 persons were killed in the state in 2019 and more than 11 have been killed in 2020.
