Plateau confirms five cases of Lassa fever

Plateau State Government has stated that 5 persons have been admitted and diagnosed with Lassa Fever in the state.

The State Commissioner of Health, Dr Nimkong Ndam, who disclosed this in Jos said that two of the victims were undergoing treatment at the Bingham University Teaching Hospital while the remaining three were receiving treatment at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital.

He said the state government in conjunction with the Federal Government have the capacity to curtail the spread and also provide adequate drugs to treat those on admission.

He said: “The five of them on admission are doing well, they would soon be discharged. Apart from drugs, the government has also purchased personal protective equipment to take care of those that would treat the victims.”

The State Commissioner of Health implored residents of the state to always cover their foods and ensure that their environments are clean and free of rodents especially rats that are a carrier of the disease.

He further implored them not to engage in self-medication but report any case of Lassa fever in their community or neighbourhood for appropriate treatment.
