Defecting Imo lawmakers have lost their seats ― PDP

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Wednesday has said that those who defected to the ruling All progressive Congress, APC, have lost their seats as representative of the people in Imo state.

The party made the statement after the leadership said it received some reports that some members elected on the party’s platform have defected to the ruling All progressive Congress, APC.

In a statement by the People’s democratic party, the Leadership of the party said it has received reports that some members of the Imo state House of Assembly elected on the platform of the PDP, have decided to abdicate the mandate they hold on the pedestal of the Peoples Democratic Party, to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC), ostensibly for their very selfish gains.

Also, while addressing a press conference at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja, its national spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, said their defection to the ruling party does not satisfy the provisions of the constitution.

While noting that there was no division in the PDP or a merger with another political group, he said their exit from the party has created vacancies in their constituencies.

The main opposition party, therefore, called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to begin a process of conducting a fresh election to elect new representatives for the constituencies.

He said where the electoral body fails to do the needful, the party would challenge the action in court.
