Netflix has announced that ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’, Chadwick Boseman’s last movie before his death, will premiere on the platform on December 18, 2020.

The US media service and streaming giant broke the news in a post on its social media page.

“Introducing Ma Rainey and her band. ‘Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom’ on Netflix December 18,” it wrote on Instagram.

The American drama film, which is an adaptation of August Wilson’s 1984 classic, starred several movie stars including Viola Davies.

The movie follows the story of Ma Rainey (Davies), a southern singer, her trumpeter Levee (Boseman) and their quest for relevance in Chicago’s music industry in the 1920s.

Boseman, the star of ‘Black Panther’, Marvel’s blockbuster superhero film, died of colon cancer in August.

Born and raised in Anderson, South Carolina, he got his start in the movie industry in an episode of ‘Third Watch’ in 2003.

He would later feature on ‘Law and Order’, ‘ER’ as well as ‘CSI’ before getting his breakout role as Jackie Robinson in ’42’.

It was his act in ’42’ that led directly to his role as T’Challa/Black Panther, the fictional leader of Wakanda — a character that first appeared in ‘Captain America: Civil War’.

He won several awards for his portrayal of the iconic Marvel character.
