Enugu metropolis, the capital of the state was thrown into turmoil on Saturday night, December 27 following an attack by suspected unknown gun men.
It was gathered that the security personnel were on routine patrol when they were attacked by these hoodlums.
WITHIN NIGERIA source revealed that the incident which happened at Zik’s Avenue sent pandemonium and palpable fear though out the state, leading to early closure of some recreational centres and major roads both in the city and hinterland in the state.

Our source who preferred anonymity explained that ” the incident happened at about 7pm in the evening at Osondu bus stop, along Zik’s Avenue, here in Enugu state.”
Narrating further, our source said that ” we were heading towards that area when we heard a loud sound which we learnt was a gunshot. We thought that the policemen ahead of us have hit some persons but on a second look, we discovered that it was the Hilux donated to the police section of Distress Response Squad, DRS that was involved.”
The source also revealed that ” we learnt some minutes later that some persons numbering about four in a vehicle have waylaid the security outfit, shot the personnel inside the Hilux and set it ablaze. All the four security personnel in the vehicle were burnt to death ”
Another source told WITHIN NIGERIA that ” we were at Nnaji street when we hear kpa! kpa! kpa!. We thought it was Christmas knock out. But when reached at Osondu bus stop, we saw that a Hilux jeep has been attacked by the unknown gun men. We saw one person that was trapped inside the vehicle. We don’t know what happened to other security personnel.
“We are surprised by this attack because this area is one of the most peaceful areas in Enugu metropolis. ”
Also explaining, another resident of Enugu, Onyeoma Franklin said that “this morning when I saw the news of police attack by unknown gunmen along Zik Avenue, Enugu yesterday night, I decided to go to the scene myself.
“When I got there, I found out that it happened in front of Ozoho pharmacy by the entrance of Good Shepherd hospital.

“While the incident is bad and condemnable, I still thank God that the pharmacy building didn’t catch fire considering the proximity of the burnt car to the building.
“I’m just wondering how it happened because that place is not police checking point neither is it a lonely road.
“May God protect us and may the souls of the officers involved rest on.”
The Enugu police command is yet to confirm the incident as all calls by our reporter to the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Daniel Ndukwe proved abortive as he was not picking his calls.
