CABINET SHUFFLE: Doris Uzoka-Anite shifts to her third ministry in three years

Changes within Nigeria’s federal cabinet have once again placed the minister of state for budget and planning, Doris Uzoka-Anite, at the centre of a fresh ministerial redeployment.

Her latest assignment marks the third time her portfolio has been adjusted since she joined the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under President Bola Tinubu in 2023.

The recent redeployment places her in the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning as minister of state under the minister of budget and economic planning, Atiku Bagudu.

The change means the minister has moved across three ministries in roughly three years of service within the federal cabinet.

Her first appointment came in August 2023 when President Tinubu named her minister of industry, trade and investment shortly after the inauguration of the administration.

During that period, she worked within the ministry responsible for overseeing industrial development, trade relations and policies designed to stimulate investment within the Nigerian economy.

However, after about one year and two months in the role, the president approved a cabinet reshuffle that reassigned several ministers across portfolios.

As part of the adjustments, the minister of industry, trade and investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, was redeployed from that position while the minister of trade and investment, Jumoke Oduwole, assumed leadership of the ministry.

Following the reshuffle in October 2024, Uzoka-Anite was assigned to the Ministry of Finance where she served as minister of state for finance.

In that capacity, she worked under the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun.

Her role in the finance ministry involved supporting the government’s economic management framework alongside senior officials responsible for fiscal policy and financial coordination.

Speaking about her appointment at the time, the minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, Wale Edun, explained the expectations attached to her position.

“Her appointment would be instrumental in supporting ongoing economic initiatives,” he said.

Her tenure within the finance ministry lasted approximately one year and four months before another cabinet change introduced a new assignment.

The latest adjustment now places her within the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning as minister of state.

In this position, she is expected to support the ministry in responsibilities linked to national budgeting frameworks, planning policies and economic coordination.

The ministry plays a central role in preparing the country’s annual budget and aligning government programmes with medium-term development goals.

The minister of budget and economic planning, Atiku Bagudu, currently heads the ministry where Uzoka-Anite now serves as minister of state.

Her redeployment reflects a broader pattern of ministerial adjustments occasionally undertaken by administrations to redistribute responsibilities within government.

Before her entry into federal politics, Uzoka-Anite served at the state level in Imo State.

She was appointed commissioner for finance and coordinating economy in the state government, a role she held for about two and a half years.

During that period, she was involved in financial planning and coordination of economic activities within the state administration.

Her transition to the federal cabinet followed her nomination and confirmation as a minister in 2023.

Beyond public service, Uzoka-Anite previously built a professional career within the private sector spanning nearly two decades.

Her early professional training began in the medical field after graduating from the University of Benin.

She briefly worked as a medical officer at Providence Hospital between June and October 2002.

After leaving medical practice, she moved into the banking sector where she began a long career in financial services.

She joined Zenith Bank as an assistant banking officer and gradually rose through several professional ranks within the organisation.

Over time, she advanced into senior management positions within the bank. Her career at Zenith Bank eventually culminated in her appointment as group head of treasury.

She held that role until March 2021 when she exited the organisation. Her movement between the private sector and public administration reflects a career path that combines experience in healthcare, finance and governance.

Observers of Nigeria’s cabinet structure note that redeployments of ministers often occur when administrations attempt to realign policy priorities or administrative needs.

Such changes sometimes involve transferring ministers across portfolios rather than removing them from the cabinet entirely.

In the current case, Uzoka-Anite has remained part of the Federal Executive Council despite the adjustments to her portfolio.

Her latest assignment in the planning ministry adds another stage to her evolving role within the administration.

Across the three appointments she has held since 2023, her responsibilities have shifted between economic policy, finance management and national planning.

The progression also reflects the dynamic nature of cabinet appointments where ministers may serve in different departments depending on administrative decisions.

For the minister of state for budget and planning, Doris Uzoka-Anite, the latest redeployment signals another chapter within her relatively short but varied period in federal office.

As the administration continues its policy agenda, the planning ministry where she now serves will remain central to coordinating fiscal frameworks and development strategies for the country.

Her journey through three ministries within three years highlights the fluid structure of Nigeria’s executive appointments and the evolving distribution of responsibilities within the federal cabinet.
