BACKYARD FARMING: Six easy steps to build a successful home garden

Rising food prices across urban centres have pushed many households to explore home gardening as a practical way to secure fresh produce.

In densely populated cities such as Lagos, where housing patterns are largely rental-based, limited space continues to shape how residents approach small-scale farming.

Data from BuyLetLive indicates that about 98.5 per cent of residents in Lagos live in rented apartments, a factor that restricts access to open land for cultivation.

This constraint has encouraged the use of balconies and other compact spaces for growing vegetables and fruits in containers.

Home gardening in such environments is often adapted to suit confined areas, relying on pots, trays, and vertical arrangements to maximise available space.

Beyond food supply, small-scale gardening is also seen as an activity that supports mental engagement and daily routine.

Experts note that success in home gardening depends on combining basic agricultural knowledge with consistent care practices.

Good quality seeds

Seed quality

A home gardening practitioner, Uduak Bassey, explained that selecting the right seeds is a critical starting point for anyone intending to grow plants successfully.

“Choosing the right plants and high-quality seeds is crucial for a thriving garden, as it ensures predictable results and allows you to save seeds for future use,” she said.

She added, “This approach can save you time and money in the long run.”

Bassey noted that environmental compatibility should guide plant selection, especially in regions with specific climate conditions.

“For example, growing strawberries in Lagos may not be successful due to incompatible growing conditions, so opting for native plants that suit your local environment will yield better results,” she said.

She also cautioned against relying on seeds extracted from market produce, explaining that such seeds may not deliver consistent quality.

Soil preparation

Soil preparation

In addition to seed selection, soil preparation remains a central factor in determining plant health and productivity.

Bassey advised that soil used in home gardens should be nutrient-rich, properly drained, and suitable for the type of crops being cultivated.

“Ensure your soil is rich in nutrients, well-drained, and has the right pH for your plants,” she said.

She further explained that adding compost and organic materials can improve soil structure and fertility over time.

Sunlight exposure

Light exposure to farmland

Sunlight exposure is another essential element in the growth cycle of most plants commonly grown in home gardens.

Bassey stated that vegetables and flowering plants generally require between six and eight hours of direct sunlight daily to develop properly.

She advised that gardeners should position their containers in areas where adequate sunlight can be received throughout the day.

Watering routine

Watering routine

Watering practices also play a significant role in maintaining plant health in confined growing environments.

According to Bassey, consistency in watering is necessary to keep the soil moist without causing waterlogging.

She explained that watering frequency should be adjusted based on weather conditions and the specific needs of each plant variety.

Pest management

Pest Control

Pest control remains an ongoing task in home gardening, particularly in environments where plants are closely spaced.

“I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase, ‘prevention is better than cure’. It applies to gardening too! Monitor your garden regularly for pests and diseases,” she said.

She added, “Catch the pests early, before they multiply rapidly and spread.”

Bassey recommended the use of integrated pest management methods, including natural predators and bio-based treatments, to limit chemical exposure.

Mulching

Mulching

Mulching is also identified as an effective method for improving soil conditions and supporting plant growth.

This practice involves covering the surface of the soil with organic materials such as leaves, grass, or straw.

“Applying mulch around the plant helps to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds,” she said.

She added that organic mulch materials gradually break down and contribute nutrients back into the soil.

As interest in home gardening continues to grow, experts emphasise the importance of adapting techniques to suit available space and environmental conditions.

They note that even within limited urban settings, careful planning and adherence to basic principles can support steady crop production.

With consistent attention to seed quality, soil health, sunlight, watering, pest management, and mulching, small home gardens can remain productive throughout the year.
