Looks, fashion wins & viral moments: Everything you missed at AMVCA cultural night
SHARE

If your timeline was not flooded with vibrant Aso-Oke, intricate beadwork and dramatic cultural looks on Friday night, were you even online?

The AMVCA Cultural Day was more than a red carpet event. It was a full celebration of African identity, style and storytelling. From celebrities who shut down social media with regal entrances to daring fashion risks that actually paid off, the night delivered some of the most talked-about moments of the AMVCA season.

The Best Dressed: A Celebration of African Royalty

The Balmoral Convention Centre in Victoria Island transformed into a runway of heritage and high fashion on Friday, May 8, 2026, as celebrities stepped out in stunning cultural ensembles inspired by different parts of Nigeria.
Under the theme “Honouring Craft, Celebrating Culture,” stars showed up in richly detailed outfits that blended tradition with modern glamour. It was not just about looking good. Every bead, embroidery pattern and fabric choice told a story.

From regal Yoruba-inspired agbadas to dramatic Edo silhouettes and contemporary takes on Fulani fashion, celebrities embraced culture with confidence and theatrical flair.
While the official Best Dressed winners are yet to be announced, several stars already emerged as fan favourites online. See some below:

BBNaija’s Neo Akpofure & Media Personality VJ Adams
BBNaija’s Saga & Actor Uzor Arukwe
BBNaija’s Imisi & Actress Juliana Olayode
Actors Emeka Nwagbaraocha & Ibrahim Suleiman
Influencer Jenni Frank & BBNaija’s Liquorose
BBNaija’s Queen Mercy Atang & Prince Nelson

Viral Moments That Took Over Social Media

The Cultural Night quickly became the centre of conversation online, with clips and photos dominating timelines across Nigeria and beyond.

Pretty Mike’s Corset Look Sparks Reactions:

Pretty Mike

Pretty Mike stayed true to his reputation for dramatic entrances at the 2026 AMVCA Cultural Day, arriving in a controversial corset-style ball gown that immediately sparked reactions online. The outfit, which featured an exaggerated snatched waist, divided netizens with some praising his fearless fashion choices while others dismissed it as another publicity stunt. Videos of the look, especially the back view, quickly went viral, with many jokingly asking who put Pretty Mike in a corset.

The Men Refused To Be Outshined:

Kanaga Jnr, Sooj, Stan Nze, Cregx and Mensan

The men also came prepared. Reality stars and actors like Kanaga Jnr, Sooj, Cregx, Mensan and host Stan Nze earned praise for their richly styled cultural outfits and royal-inspired looks.

Many viewers noted that this year’s male attendees made more effort than usual, turning the event into a proper fashion showdown instead of the usual female-dominated red carpet conversation.

Toyin Abraham and Eniola Ajao Turn Heads:

Toyin Abraham and Eniola Ajao also generated buzz with their elaborate Yoruba and Edo-inspired ensembles, with fans praising the detailed craftsmanship and cultural representation behind their looks.

Early Fan Favourites Emerge:

Mercy Eke, Bolaji Ogunmola and Osas Ighodaro

Fashion lovers online also singled out stars like Mercy Eke, Bolaji Ogunmola and Osas Ighodaro as early contenders for Best Dressed Female thanks to their simple but head-turning headpieces, bold colours and styling.

“The Met Gala of Africa” Conversations Return:

Bisola Aiyeola and Uche Jombo

As expected, netizens once again compared the AMVCA Cultural Night to the Met Gala, but this time with a distinctly African identity.

The hashtag #AMVCA12 trended as fans debated standout looks, cultural references and modern interpretations of traditional fashion. From Bisola Aiyeola’s vibrant silhouette to Uche Jombo’s graceful nod to Fulani heritage, the night proved that African fashion can be both deeply traditional and globally relevant.

The Main Awards Night Is Up Next

If the Cultural Night set the tone, then expectations for the main AMVCA ceremony are now even higher. The 12th AMVCAs will hold tonight, Saturday, May 9, 2026, at Eko Hotel & Suites, bringing the four-day celebration of African film and entertainment to a close.

This year also marks a major hosting change as Bovi Ugboma and Nomzamo Mbatha take over hosting duties, ending IK Osakioduwa’s long run as the face of the ceremony.
On the awards side, productions like To Kill A Monkey, The Herd and Gingerrr are among the biggest contenders heading into the night.

With veteran actress Joke Silva leading the judging panel, this year’s edition is also placing stronger attention on writers, directors and technical talents behind the scenes.
The culture has already been celebrated. Now, it is time for the awards, the winners and the biggest red carpet moments of Africa’s biggest night in film.
