WhatsApp has begun rolling out a username feature that allows users to connect with others without revealing their phone numbers, marking one of the platform’s latest privacy-focused updates.
The new option enables users to create and reserve unique usernames that can be used when initiating conversations, reducing the need to disclose personal contact details.
According to information released by WhatsApp, the feature is being introduced gradually and may not yet be available in all countries.
The development is expected to benefit individuals, businesses, creators and organisations seeking additional privacy while communicating on the messaging platform.
For users interested in activating the feature once it becomes available, WhatsApp has outlined a straightforward process.
Update the application
Users are advised to ensure they are running the latest version of WhatsApp, as the username feature is only accessible through updated versions of the application.
Open the settings menu
After launching WhatsApp, users should navigate to the Settings section of the application.
Select the account option
Within the Settings menu, users are required to tap the Account tab before selecting the Username option.
Create a unique username
Users can then enter a preferred username or make use of WhatsApp’s built-in username generator to find available alternatives.
Reserve the username
Once a suitable option has been selected, users can confirm and reserve the username for future use on the platform.
WhatsApp noted that eligible businesses, creators and organisations may also be able to claim usernames already associated with their Instagram or Facebook accounts.
Activate username messaging
After the feature becomes available in a user’s location, the username can be used instead of a phone number when contacting someone for the first time.
Users may also activate an optional username key designed to control who can initiate conversations with them.
WhatsApp said the introduction of usernames is intended to strengthen user privacy while simplifying interactions on the platform.
The company explained that, unlike some social media platforms, there will be no public username directory or automatic username suggestions.
As a result, anyone wishing to start a conversation will need to know the exact username of the person they intend to contact.
WhatsApp added that the rollout will continue over the coming months and users will receive notifications within the application when the feature becomes available in their respective countries.
