Gunfire tore through one of Seattle’s biggest summer traditions on Sunday evening, turning a food festival built around music, vendors, and family fun into a scene of panic and loss. By the time the chaos settled, three people were dead and four others were fighting through injuries at a nearby trauma center. A suspect is now in police custody, but as of Monday, investigators still haven’t said what triggered the attack.

What Happened at Seattle Center

The shooting broke out just after 6 p.m. Sunday at Seattle Center, the sprawling 74-acre campus that sits in the shadow of the Space Needle and hosts the city’s biggest public gatherings. Thousands of people were on the grounds for Bite of Seattle, the region’s largest free-admission food festival, when multiple gunshots rang out, and at least two firearms were later recovered by police at the scene.

Witnesses described a sound many at first mistook for something harmless. One attendee, Nick Bate, told Seattle’s KIRO that he initially thought there were fireworks going off before the crowd around him “flooded and ran.”Another witness described the gunfire as sounding like it came from an automatic weapon, and investigators are looking into whether a Glock switch, a small device that converts a semi-automatic handgun into a fully automatic one, was used in the attack.

The scene that followed was described by more than one bystander as pure chaos.

Estan Wakonabo, who was waiting in line for a photo booth with his girlfriend, said he later returned to the area and counted roughly eight people on the ground, some with visible gunshot wounds.

Not everyone ran. Issaiah Flores, who was working a carnival game booth, said he realized children were trapped in a play area as the panic spread and began lifting kids, and even adults, over a fence to get them to safety.

The Toll: Three Dead, Four Hospitalized

Seattle Fire Department first responders arrived within minutes and worked to save two victims at the scene, but their efforts were unsuccessful, and both were pronounced dead where they fell. Hours later, Acting Seattle Police Chief Tyrone Davis confirmed a third victim, an adult woman who had been rushed into emergency surgery at Harborview Medical Center in critical condition, had also died.

Four other people were wounded and taken to Harborview, the region’s top-level trauma center. Hospital spokesperson Susan Gregg said the injuries spanned gunshot wounds to the arm, leg, abdomen, and lower leg. Among the survivors being treated was a toddler. Officials confirmed a 2-year-old boy remained hospitalized alongside a 23-year-old man and a 39-year-old woman, all listed in stable or satisfactory condition. A fifth person with minor injuries was treated at the scene but declined transport to the hospital.

Suspect in Custody, Motive Still Unknown

Seattle Mayor Katie Wilson confirmed that police had a suspect in custody, though her office’s account of the arrest shifted as the night went on.

Wilson initially said two people had been detained before later clarifying that only one suspect was in custody. That suspect was being interviewed by Seattle Police detectives as of Sunday night, with the department expected to release further details Monday morning.

Despite the arrest, questions remain about who else may have been involved. Several witnesses reported seeing three individuals flee the scene right after the shots were fired, with one of them allegedly carrying an AR-style rifle. Investigators have also said multiple shooters may have been involved in the attack, even as only one person has been arrested so far. As of the latest reporting, police had not disclosed any apparent motive for the shooting.

Federal authorities moved quickly to support the local investigation. Multiple agents from the Seattle field office of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives responded to the scene, and the FBI confirmed it was aware of the shooting. Washington Governor Bob Ferguson said the state SWAT team was also dispatched to Seattle Center at the request of city police.

Mayor Wilson didn’t mince words describing the scale of the tragedy. “What happened at the Seattle Center today was an act of horrific violence,” she said in a statement, adding that “impacted families are living through the worst moment of their lives, and an entire community is trying to understand how a gathering built around culture, connection, and joy ended in gunfire.”

She also acknowledged a truth that will linger long after the crime scene tape comes down. “We know that many people who were not physically injured will carry what they experienced today for a long time,” Wilson said, urging anyone struggling with the aftermath to reach out to the 988 mental health crisis line. She added, pointedly, that “no one should have to weigh the risk of being shot before attending an event, gathering with friends, or experiencing their city.”

About Bite of Seattle

Bite of Seattle is a three-day festival that draws an estimated 350,000 guests each year, featuring hundreds of local food vendors and live music performances across the Seattle Center grounds.

Sunday marked the final day of this year’s event, and it was unfolding just steps from some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks, including the Space Needle and Climate Pledge Arena, home to the Seattle Kraken and Seattle Storm.

Seattle Police have asked anyone with video or eyewitness information from the shooting to come forward as the investigation continues. This is a developing story, and further updates, including the identity of the suspect and any charges filed, are expected as Seattle Police release additional information.
