On August 21, 1933, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), the apex body for football in Nigeria, was founded as the Nigerian Football Association.

One of the earliest football governing bodies in Africa, the association was established 27 years before Nigeria gained independence.

According to NFF records, the body was created to organize, regulate, and promote the game across the then colony and protectorate.

The name was later changed to the Nigeria Football Association, and in 2008 it was formally rebranded as the Nigeria Football Federation.

Today, the NFF oversees the growth of the sport from grassroots to international level. It manages the Super Eagles, Super Falcons, all national youth teams, and coordinates the Nigeria Professional Football League.

An NFF spokesperson said the 1933 founding gave structure to a game Nigerians had already embraced with passion, and laid the foundation for the football culture seen today.
