After 13 years of waiting, including two delays and a leak scandal which had the potential to ruin the entire project, Rockstar Games has at last allowed the world to see Grand Theft Auto VI in action. On August 27, 2026 the studio teamed up with Netflix to premiere ‘Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look’, a nearly half-hour-long gameplay demonstration that gave fans their first proper impression of what life in Leonida is going to be like. The event took place just under three months before the game’s launch and is therefore the closest thing GTA 6 has to a preview event, answering a number of questions that had never been addressed by trailers alone.
The details confirmed to date include the launch date and the price as well as what took place in those 26 to 27 minutes of footage.
When will GTA 6 be released?
Grand Theft Auto VI will be released on Thursday, November 19, 2026, for the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar gave the current date in November 2025 following a number of delays, stating that the team had needed additional development time to complete the game to the standard it desired and that players deserved it. Take-Two has kept to that date ever since, even though there has been speculation about whether the studio would be able to meet it.
It’s important not to forget the difficulties this journey has had. The release date of the game had originally been moved from its intended launch in fall 2025 to a more definite one about a year later, at which point Rockstar apologised directly to its fans for the delay and gave the reason that it was necessary to produce a game of the quality that players expect. That initial delay was later followed by a second one, bringing the launch to its present date of November 2026. Since the last major entry in the series, GTA 5, came out in 2013, each postponement has hurt a bit more than the one before.
No definite release date for the PC version has been given yet, and Rockstar has said nothing so far regarding the next generation of GTA Online. Don’t look for either piece of information before the game launches — the studio has kept those details to itself on both issues.
What will the cost be and which editions are available?
On June 25, 2026, pre-orders for GTA 6 were quietly launched on the PlayStation and Microsoft stores, and the prices have since been finalised. There are two editions:
- Standard Edition — $79.99
- Ultimate Edition — $99.99
Both editions come without a physical disc, which means anyone who buys the boxed version is in fact only paying for a download code and a case. Although the CEO of Take-Two, Strauss Zelnick, has already described the early pre-order figures as “unprecedented”, the company has not given a specific figure to show just how unprecedented they are.
The Extended Look: What Actually Happened on Netflix
Rockstar revealed the showcase on August 6, using a brief 30-second video to give fans a new glimpse of the characters Jason and Lucia and what appeared to be a part of the game’s theme song. The entire event was broadcast on Netflix on August 27 at 3 p.m. ET and was available there exclusively for six hours before being posted on Rockstar’s YouTube channel at 9 p.m. ET that evening.
The entire thing was recorded directly from in-game footage displayed on a PlayStation 5, not from a pre-rendered cinematic sequence. This point was important to many long-time fans who have become suspicious of shiny announcement trailers which have little to do with the actual finished game. The footage lasted about 26 or 27 minutes according to the source, and it is now the longest and most detailed look that has ever been given of the game.
It was no accident that this happened. In the week before that, Rockstar had been working to contain a series of leaked gameplay clips, which apparently belonged to a leaker known as “Cyberleek” and who said that he had a complete build of the game. On August 26, Rockstar officially dealt with the leaks, describing the situation as “heartbreaking” for the development team and asking players to postpone passing judgement until they could view the official footage, preferably by playing the game themselves. In this way, the Extended Look also served as a measure to control the damage and as a celebration of their achievement.
Meet Jason and Lucia
The game’s two main characters are given the spotlight. Jason Duval is shown as a reserved ex-military drug runner, and Lucia Caminos is a recently released prisoner who is a skilled fighter as well—this can be seen as the modern-day counterpart to GTA’s long-standing tradition of criminal duos, with the difference that this time the two are actually a real couple sharing in the story.
The beginning of the footage establishes the atmosphere: Jason and Lucia arrive with the intention of “picking up” something from a run-down apartment block, and the game begins by having the player control Jason, who is then at liberty to start conversations and interact with the other people present. The job turns out to be one that has been arranged by a local businessman and owner of a nightclub called Boobie Ike, and it quickly takes a turn for the worse. What begins as a simple errand gradually develops into a shootout, during which there is something that appears to be very much like the “Dead Eye” aiming feature from Red Dead Redemption.
There are also some small, human-like touches. For example, when Jason pats a dog a pop-up icon of an angel appears, apparently giving the player some sort of moral credit for that action. Although this is a minor feature, it suggests that there is a more extensive behavioural system working behind the scenes, a system that seems to keep track of more than just the number of crimes you commit.
That applies to the relationship as well. As a Dazed magazine cover story recently reported, the impact of a player’s choices on Jason and Lucia’s relationship is expected to be greater than the honour system which Rockstar developed for Red Dead Redemption. It is not the case that they always share jobs either, at one stage the couple are given a job on the condition that only one of them can take it, and in the demo Lucia is the one to accept it, implying that players will at some point be able to choose which of the two takes jobs of this kind.
Welcome Back to Vice City
The scene takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, which hosts a reconstructed and modernised version of one of GTA’s most popular cities. Vice City has officially returned and is presented with a level of density and detail that was essentially necessary after thirteen years of waiting. The footage also displayed a wide range of open-world activities that extend well beyond simply driving and shooting.
The confirmed activities include scuba diving, jet skiing, kayaking, base jumping from tall buildings, taking boat rides on fan boats, and swimming in open water. On the more grounded side, Jason plays basketball and Lucia does the bench press, while street races, dirt bike races, track races, and car meetings also take place. This shows that the world is designed just as much for people to roam around as it is for criminal activity.
New and Returning Gameplay Mechanics
Beyond the mission footage, the Extended Look confirmed a long list of systems Rockstar has built or rebuilt for GTA 6:
- Six-star Wanted levels return, with police response escalating as crimes get more serious and on-screen icons indicating exactly what’s drawing their attention.
- A new “Criminal Profile” system tracks a player’s behaviour over the long term, separate from the temporary Wanted level — meaning your reputation may follow you well beyond a single police chase.
- Combat includes targeted aiming and slow-motion sequences that highlight an enemy’s weak points during firefights.
- Social media within the game works perfectly, allowing NPCs to live-stream events as they occur, with comments and reactions appearing in real-time in some cases.
- The mechanics of one’s lifestyle cause Jason and Lucia’s physical condition to change over time as a result of their habits regarding eating, drinking, and exercising.
- The effects of the player’s decisions are visible, such as their character’s look changing if they spend several days fleeing from the police, and the requirement to actually sleep.
Put together, it is the most reactive open world that Rockstar has created for a GTA game, at least in theory. Whether or not it will stand up to the close examination of millions of players in November is a question that no one can currently answer.
What’s Still Unclear
A few things remain open. There’s no word yet on a PC release date, and Rockstar hasn’t said anything about GTA Online’s next chapter. The game is also shipping as a single-player experience at launch, with no confirmation of how or when an online mode built for GTA 6’s world might arrive. It’s also worth noting the PS5 Pro question: enhanced support hasn’t been confirmed, and at least one industry analyst has suggested the game may not hit 60fps even on more powerful hardware, despite improved visuals.
Take-Two’s next earnings call, expected in early November, right before launch, could shed more light on pre-order numbers and give the clearest signal yet of just how big this release is shaping up to be.

Grand Theft Auto VI is now less than three months away, and for the first time, fans have real gameplay to point to instead of just trailers and speculation. November 19 is the date to circle.
