For lecturers in Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions, the Federal Government’s approval of N10bn for the 2026 National Research Fund grant cycle presents an opportunity to secure funding for research across a wide range of disciplines.
The Tertiary Education Trust Fund said the latest funding round would cover 30 priority thematic areas spanning Humanities and Social Sciences, Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation, as well as Cross-Cutting research.
The 2026 programme follows the completion of the 2025 cycle, during which slightly more than N6.09bn was awarded to fund 174 research projects.
This year’s process begins with concept notes, meaning Principal Investigators must first convince the fund that their proposed research is worthy of consideration before they can proceed to a full proposal.
Only concept notes that pass evaluation and are regarded as fundable will lead to an invitation to submit complete research proposals.
Who is eligible?
TETFund said lecturers employed by public tertiary institutions in Nigeria can apply, while projects involving researchers from different disciplines are particularly encouraged.
The Principal Investigator will head the research team and bear responsibility for the conduct of the project.
The fund also requires the PI to be based in the institution applying for the grant, with that institution serving as both the coordinating body and guarantor for the proper utilisation of the approved funds.
Application process
The entire application exercise will be conducted online through the TETFund National Research Fund portal at nrf.tetfund.gov.ng.
Applicants are expected to follow the instructions on the portal to prepare and submit their concept notes, with successful applicants subsequently invited to submit full research proposals.
TETFund advised prospective applicants to read the Research Brief and application Guidelines carefully before completing their submissions.
Once received, the concept notes will be assessed by the National Research Fund Screening and Monitoring Committee.
Principal Investigators whose submissions make the cut will be notified and asked to prepare their full proposals through the online platform.
For proposals that are screened and considered fundable, the PI and at least one other member of the research team will be required to defend the proposal before the committee.
Proposals that successfully pass that stage will be forwarded to the TETFund Board of Trustees for approval and eventual disbursement.
Important dates
The NRF portal is scheduled to begin accepting concept notes on August 31, 2026.
Applicants have until October 15, 2026, Nigerian time, to complete their submissions.
TETFund has specifically stated that the deadline will not be extended, making timely submission an important requirement for prospective applicants.

The grant covers 30 priority areas distributed across three broad categories.
Under Humanities and Social Sciences, eligible themes include Citizenship and National Integration; Conflict, Defence and Security; Economic Development and Globalisation; Education and Human Capital; Gender, Equity and Social Inclusion; Governance, Politics, Law and Ethics; History, Culture and Identities; Humanities, Social Sciences, Technology and Business Interface; Languages, Literatures and Media; Population and Migration; Social Development and Welfare; and Tourism, Sports and Recreation.
The Science, Engineering, Technology and Innovation category covers Agriculture and Food Security; Geosciences; Health and Social Welfare; Industry and Innovation; Information Technology, Computing and Telecommunications; Power and Energy; Science and Engineering; Space Science and Technology; Sustainable Use of Natural Resources and Terrestrial Ecosystems; Transport and Infrastructure; and Water and Sanitation.
The Cross-Cutting category includes Blue Economy; Clean and Affordable Energy; Entrepreneurship and Wealth Creation; Environment, Housing, Urban and Regional Development; Innovation and Technology in National Defence Capabilities; Resource Governance; and National System of Innovation.
