Flood Alert: 10 Things You Must Do If Water Enters Your Home

Following the recent heavy flooding that submerged houses and roads in Rivers State and 32 other states, emergency officials have urged residents to prioritize safety over property.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency (RSEMA) advised residents whose homes have been inundated to immediately switch off electricity at the mains.

Officials warned that touching electrical appliances or switches while standing in floodwater can cause electrocution.

Health experts also cautioned residents to avoid direct contact with floodwater, noting that it is contaminated with sewage and refuse, exposing victims to cholera, typhoid and malaria.

They further warned against fallen electric poles and reptiles washed into homes by the flood. Electric poles were reportedly destroyed in parts of Port Harcourt during the deluge.

Residents were advised to move to higher ground and contact emergency responders where water levels continue to rise.

10 Things You Must Do If Water Enters Your Home

1. Cut power immediately: Switch off electricity at the mains to avoid electrocution. Do not touch electrical appliances while standing in water.

2. Move to higher ground: Relocate family members, children and the elderly upstairs or to a raised platform.

3. Protect drinking water: Cover wells and water containers. Do not drink floodwater.

4. Secure valuables: Move mattresses, documents, electronics and cooking utensils to safer locations, as many residents were seen doing.

5. Avoid wading: Do not walk through moving floodwater. It may contain sewage, refuse and open drains that raise disease risks.

6. Turn off gas and appliances: Disconnect gas cylinders and unplug appliances to prevent fire and explosion.

7. Watch for electric poles: Report fallen poles and avoid contact with submerged cables. Electric poles were reportedly destroyed in parts of the city.

8. Prevent disease: Wash hands with clean water, use disinfectant, and clear refuse around the home once water recedes.

9. Do not drive: Avoid driving through flooded roads. Several vehicles were trapped on major roads on Sunday.

10. Call for help early: Contact NEMA, the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency or neighbours if water continues to rise and you have nowhere else to go.
