Google stock took a hard hit after the closing bell on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. Shares of Alphabet, the parent company of Google, slid roughly 10% in after-hours trading once the company posted third-quarter results that landed well below Wall Street’s profit forecasts.

The timing made it sting. The shares had finished the regular session up about 1.5%, near $325, as traders positioned for a decent report. Within minutes of the release they were heading the other way. Depending on the minute and the outlet you checked, the stock was down anywhere from 8% to 11%, and at the low it touched about $288.

One caveat before going further: this was an after-hours move. The regular session on Thursday will show how much of the drop sticks.

The numbers behind the Google stock sell-off

Revenue was not the problem. Alphabet reported $127.6 billion for the quarter, up 25% from a year earlier and almost exactly what analysts had pencilled in, which was around $128 billion. It was the company’s 13th straight quarter of double-digit growth, and Sundar Pichai pointed out that Alphabet is now running at a half-trillion dollars in annual revenue.

Profit was the problem. Earnings per share came in at $2.12 against a consensus of about $3.02, a miss of roughly 30%. CNBC, which backs out some items, put adjusted EPS at $2.67, which still fell short. Net income dropped about 25% from last year to roughly $26 billion.

Most of the gap traces back to a line that has nothing to do with search ads or cloud contracts. Alphabet owns stakes in private and newly public companies, and the value of those stakes moves its earnings around. In the second quarter that worked in its favor. In the third, other income and expense swung to a loss of about $8.2 billion, mostly an unrealized hit on its SpaceX investment after that company’s stock price fell. A year ago the same category produced a gain of more than $10 billion, so the year-over-year comparison looks ugly.

Operating income, the cleaner measure of how the business itself did, rose 30%. Operating margin was 31.8%, though, down from 34% in the second quarter.

Search growth cools, and investors noticed

The number that seems to have rattled people most sits inside the core business. Google Search and other revenue grew 12% to about $63.4 billion. That missed the $64.96 billion analysts expected, and it is a clear step down from 17% growth in the second quarter and 19% in the first.

Management does not see it as trouble. Pichai said query volume is growing at its fastest pace in five years, and he credited AI features for pulling in commercial queries too. CFO Anat Ashkenazi added that the company has started to lap the burst of Search growth it saw late in 2025, which makes every comparison harder.

The worry on the other side is monetization. According to a TradingKey account of the call, executives acknowledged that AI-driven search results currently earn less per query than the classic page of blue links. More searches that pay less is a fine trade if it reverses. It is a real problem if it does not, and fear of AI “cannibalizing” Google’s own franchise has hung over the shares for months.

YouTube did not help. Ad revenue reached $11.2 billion, up 9%, slightly under the roughly $11.4 billion Wall Street wanted and slower than the 13% pace of the prior quarter. Total Google Services revenue of $96.3 billion, up 11%, was about $2 billion short of expectations.

Google Cloud more than doubled, and it still was not enough

If you only read the cloud line, you would expect the stock to rally. Google Cloud revenue jumped 103% to $30.7 billion, well above the $28.7 billion analysts had modeled. Cloud operating income hit $11.1 billion, compared with $3.6 billion a year ago. Sales of Google’s TPU chip systems added to the growth, and Google Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian spoke on an earnings call for the first time, describing what he called extraordinary demand from AI labs, financial firms and large enterprises.

So why the sell-off? Because growing that fast takes enormous amounts of hardware, and the bill arrived in the same report.

Capex and negative cash flow

Alphabet spent a record $51.4 billion on capital expenditures in the quarter, more than double the $24 billion it spent a year earlier. Some analysts had actually expected even more, around $56 billion, so the figure itself was not a shock. The cash flow was. Free cash flow came in at negative $9.1 billion, which is rare for a company that has spent most of its life printing money.

Management kept its 2026 capex forecast at $195 billion to $205 billion. The more unsettling signal was about next year. Ashkenazi said capex will rise significantly in 2027, with details promised on the fourth-quarter call. Press reports have put the figure near $300 billion, though the company has not confirmed a number.

Put those pieces together and the bear case writes itself: slower Search, a heavy AI spending program with no end date, and no free cash flow to cushion it. Stocks that are priced for smooth execution tend to fall hard when all three show up in one report.

Google stock versus what the options market expected

Traders were not caught entirely off guard by the idea of a big move. Options pricing before the report implied a swing of about 6% in either direction, which would have put the stock at roughly $305 or $344. A 10% drop is well outside that range.

The setup was also fragile. Alphabet had been trading below some key moving averages and was up only about 3.6% for the year at $323.69 going into the report, even though it had touched a 52-week high of $404.47 within the past year. After the first-quarter report in April, the stock gapped up from about $350 to above $374 on a big earnings beat. That memory made Wednesday’s reversal feel sharper.

Technical analysts are already eyeing $270 as the next line of defense. It sits just above the 52-week low of $268.43, and a break below it would put the stock at levels not seen in a year.

A few things will shape the next few weeks:

  • Thursday’s regular session, which will show whether buyers step in or whether the after-hours drop extends.
  • Analyst reactions. Expect a round of revised price targets, and watch whether firms focus on the Cloud strength or the cash burn.
  • The 2027 capex number. Investors want to know how much Alphabet plans to spend and what return it expects.
  • The Search trend in the fourth quarter. Management has already warned of added pressure from currency swings and tougher year-over-year comparisons.
  • Alphabet’s equity holdings. Anthropic, in which Alphabet holds a stake, reportedly filed for an IPO just days before the earnings report, so more mark-to-market swings could show up in future quarters.

There are positives to weigh too. The Gemini app has reached one billion users, and YouTube Music and Premium has passed 150 million subscribers. Cloud is no longer a side business. It now produces about a quarter of Alphabet’s revenue and a growing share of its profit.

Google stock FAQ

Why did Google stock fall after Q3 earnings?

Earnings per share missed by about 30%, helped along by an $8.2 billion unrealized loss on the SpaceX stake. On top of that, Search growth slowed to 12%, free cash flow turned negative, and Alphabet signaled much higher spending in 2027.

Did Alphabet miss revenue estimates?

Barely. Total revenue of $127.6 billion was within a fraction of a percent of expectations, though Search and YouTube ad revenue were both below forecasts.

How did Google Cloud perform?

Very well. Revenue rose 103% to $30.7 billion and beat expectations, and operating income more than tripled.

What is the difference between GOOGL and GOOG?

Both are Alphabet shares. GOOGL is the Class A stock with voting rights, and GOOG is the Class C stock without them. Both fell after the report.

Is Google stock a buy after the drop?

That depends on your time horizon and risk tolerance, and nobody can say with certainty where the shares go from here. Some investors will see a growing cloud business at a lower price. Others will wait for evidence that AI spending is turning into profit. If you are deciding, a licensed financial advisor can look at your own situation.
