WhatsApp is finally giving people a way to post a status that goes to one group and nobody else. The company announced Group Status on October 29, 2026, as the headline item in a package of four changes aimed at crowded group chats.

If you have ever hesitated to post a photo from your church fellowship, your school alumni meet-up or your football viewing group because your boss, your aunt and half your phonebook would see it too, this update is for you.

Below is what the new WhatsApp group status features update actually does, how it differs from what you could already do, how to find it on your phone, and what you should think about before you start posting.

What is WhatsApp Group Status?

Group Status is a status update that you post inside a particular group. Only the members of that group can see it. It is not shared with your wider contact list, and it does not follow your normal status privacy settings.

Members of the group can view it, react to it and post a status of their own into the same group. Like the regular Status tab, everything disappears after 24 hours.

WhatsApp’s own pitch is simple. What you share with your running club does not need to land in your family chat. The company describes the feature as a way to match casual updates to the people they are meant for, instead of showing every moment to the same crowd.

How it differs from mentioning a group in your status

This is not WhatsApp’s first attempt at making statuses more targeted, which is why some people may think they already have this. Since late 2024, WhatsApp has let users mention an entire group inside a regular status. That mention pinged the members and gave them temporary access to that one update, even if they were excluded by your usual privacy settings.

Group Status works the other way round. You start from the group, not from your own status. The audience is set to that group automatically, so you do not have to touch your privacy settings or tag anyone to get it in front of the right people.

Mentioning a group in your status Group Status
Where you start Your own status screen Inside the group
Who sees it Your usual audience, plus group members who are mentioned Only members of that group
Notification Members get pinged by the mention No mention needed
Privacy settings Still apply to the rest of your audience Not involved
Lifespan 24 hours 24 hours

How to post a Group Status

WhatsApp’s announcement did not publish a full walkthrough, so the best guide to the steps comes from what testers saw in beta builds over the past year.

In those builds, the group info screen carries new shortcuts for adding a group status. You can post text, photos, videos or music, just as you would on your personal status. Once you pick the content, the audience is locked to that group.

  1. Open the group chat and tap the group name to reach the info screen.
  2. Look for the group status shortcut and tap it.
  3. Choose what to share: a photo, a video, a text update or a song.
  4. Post it. It is visible to everyone in the group for 24 hours.

Expect small differences between your screen and the steps above. The final layout may not match the beta exactly, and WhatsApp’s announcement did not spell out the exact buttons.

Where members will see it

According to the beta reports, a Group Status shows up in more than one place. Members can find it in the Updates tab, next to the group’s icon in the chat list, or from the group info screen. If your group has a lot of members, it is worth knowing that people who do not open the group often may still run into it through the Updates tab.

Does it work on Android and iPhone?

Here is where a little caution is needed. WhatsApp’s announcement did not name supported platforms, an app version or a rollout schedule. The screenshots the company shared come from the Android app.

What we do know is that the feature has been tested on both platforms for a while. WABetaInfo, the site that tracks WhatsApp builds, first found it in development in the Android beta 2.25.20.6 and the iOS beta 25.19.10.76 in 2025. A couple of months later, it began reaching some Android beta testers in version 2.25.22.11.

Platform What we know
Android Shown in WhatsApp’s official screenshots; tested in beta since 2025
iPhone Tested in a TestFlight beta in 2025; the official announcement does not confirm timing
Rollout No dates, regions or version numbers given; likely gradual

If you do not see it yet, update WhatsApp from the Google Play Store or the App Store and check again in a few days. Features like this rarely land for everyone on the same day.

The three other group chat updates

Group Status got the top billing, but it came with three smaller changes.

Feature What changes
Pins with no time limit You can now keep a message pinned indefinitely. Until now the options were 24 hours, 7 days or 30 days.
Message history after joining You can share recent messages with a new member after they have joined, by tapping their name in the chat. Earlier this year, this was only possible while adding someone.
Mentions and replies filter A new chat filter shows unread group conversations where you were mentioned or replied to, including messages sent with the @all tag.

For anyone who admins a busy group, the permanent pin is likely to be the quiet favourite. Meeting times, payment details and group rules no longer need to be re-pinned every month.

Privacy: things to think about before you post

A Group Status goes to everyone in that group. That sounds obvious, but in a large estate, school or community group it can include people who are not saved in your phone and whom you have never spoken to. WhatsApp’s beta material said group members can see these updates whether or not their numbers are saved in each other’s contacts.

Beta reports also said group status updates are end-to-end encrypted, so only the group can open them. WhatsApp has said the same about the message history it shares with new members. But encryption does not protect you from a member screenshotting what you post.

A few practical habits:

  • Check who is in the group before sharing anything personal.
  • Do not assume a small-sounding group is small. Look at the member count.
  • Remember that the message-history option lets newcomers read older conversation that some members may not have expected them to see. Admins and senders should think before using it.

WhatsApp Status has always been an all-or-nothing tool, apart from the option to exclude certain contacts. Many people either post to everyone or skip posting altogether. Group Status gives a middle path, closer to how people really live: one version of your day for your cousins, another for your colleagues, another for your book club.

It also fits a pattern. In recent weeks WhatsApp has been busy, with guest calling and restricted chats in beta, and scheduled messages being tested on iPhone. The company is clearly spending its effort on the group chats where most people spend their time.
