The Senate has approved 18 nominees for leadership and membership positions in two federal institutions responsible for promoting fiscal accountability and protecting human rights.
The confirmations, conducted during Wednesday’s plenary, include Abdullahi Saidu as executive chairman of the Fiscal Responsibility Commission and Salamatu Suleiman as chairman of the governing council of the National Human Rights Commission.

The approvals followed the consideration of reports submitted by the Senate committees on finance and judiciary, human rights and legal matters, which screened the nominees and recommended them for confirmation.

Presenting the report on the Fiscal Responsibility Commission nominees, the Deputy Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, Lere Oyewunmi, said the panel assessed their academic records, professional backgrounds and relevant experience before endorsing their appointments.
Similarly, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Adeniyi Adegbonmire, presented the report on the nominees for the National Human Rights Commission’s governing council.
Adegbonmire explained that the nominations were referred to his committee on April 28, 2026, while the screening exercise was conducted on Tuesday.
He said the panel examined the nominees’ curricula vitae and other supporting documents, adding that their qualifications, professional competence, experience and understanding of human rights issues met the requirements for the positions.
The committee consequently recommended that the Senate approve their appointments.
