5 Mistakes to Avoid When Asking for Job Referrals on LinkedIn

Getting noticed by employers in a competitive job market often requires more than submitting applications through recruitment websites, as professional connections can also help candidates discover opportunities and gain access to potential employers.

Platforms such as LinkedIn have made it easier for job seekers to connect with people working in their preferred industries, including employees who may be able to recommend them for available positions.

However, asking someone for a referral requires tact, preparation and respect for their time, particularly when the individual is not a close acquaintance.

According to career reports cited by industry research platform Zippia, as many as 85 per cent of jobs are filled through networking and employee referrals, highlighting the potential value of professional relationships during a job search.

Here are five important practices to observe when approaching professionals on LinkedIn for employment referrals.

1. Make your LinkedIn profile presentable

Before contacting anyone about a job opportunity, ensure that your profile provides a clear picture of your professional background and capabilities.

Your headline should explain your area of expertise, while the experience section should contain relevant details about your previous roles, responsibilities and skills.

A well-organised profile helps the person receiving your message understand who you are and assess whether your background matches the position you are interested in.

It also makes your request appear more credible and gives potential referrers enough information to decide whether they can recommend you.

2. Establish a connection before requesting assistance

Approaching a professional with an immediate request for a referral, particularly without any previous interaction, may create an unfavourable impression.

Rather than making your first message a request for help, take time to engage with the person’s professional activities on the platform.

You can follow their updates, contribute meaningful comments to relevant discussions or share perspectives on issues within your industry.

Building familiarity through genuine interaction can make subsequent communication more natural and increase the likelihood that the person will consider your request.

3. Be brief and explain your purpose clearly

Professionals often receive numerous messages, making it important to communicate your request without unnecessary explanations.

Introduce yourself, identify the position you are pursuing and briefly explain why you have contacted that particular individual.

Where possible, include the job identification number or a direct link to the vacancy so the recipient can easily locate the opportunity.

A clear and concise message also allows the person to understand what you need without spending time trying to establish the details of your request.

4. Provide the documents and information they need

Making a referral request should not leave the other person with the responsibility of gathering basic information about your qualifications.

Attach an updated CV to your message or provide a link through which the recipient can access it.

Ensure that your CV reflects the requirements of the advertised position and highlights the experience and skills relevant to the employer’s needs.

Providing these materials from the beginning makes it easier for the professional to assess your suitability and determine whether they can confidently recommend you.

5. Show appreciation, regardless of their response

A referral request does not guarantee assistance, so job seekers should remain courteous whether the person agrees to help, declines or offers alternative guidance.

Send a brief message expressing appreciation for their time and consideration, even when the outcome is not what you hoped for.

Professional networking should be approached as a continuing relationship rather than a transaction designed to secure an immediate benefit.

Maintaining a respectful attitude can leave a positive impression and preserve the connection for future employment opportunities or professional engagements.
