For celebrities, being in the public eye often means having different aspects of their lives become subjects of public discussion. From personal relationships to professional achievements, even the smallest development can attract attention, interpretations and sometimes heated arguments.

For Nollywood actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi, the past few months have brought their share of such conversations. While some have centred on her private life, others have involved her colleagues, movie promotions and the activities of netizens.

The actress has also found herself having to respond to some of the claims and conversations surrounding her. However, her latest move suggests that she may be approaching some of these issues differently. Here are 3 controversies that may have led to Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi’s recent cease-and-desist notice.

1. Toyin Abraham and the rumoured separation from her husband

Kolawole Ajeyemi & Toyin Abraham

In September 2026, Toyin Abraham found herself at the centre of rumours about trouble in her marriage to actor Kolawole Ajeyemi.

The speculation emerged after a UK-based Nigerian social media commentator, Bukky Jesse, reportedly claimed that the couple were no longer on good terms. The claim further suggested that Toyin had moved out of their matrimonial home and relocated to her newly built house. The allegation quickly attracted attention, with netizens discussing the state of the actress’s marriage.

Toyin promptly dismissed the reports and made it clear that she was not planning to walk away from her marriage.
On September 17, 2026, the actress reacted to the speculation in the comment section of an Instagram post. She wrote in Yoruba language, “Ako loruko baba, Omo ati emi mimo. Ori wa ko, eleda wa ko.” (In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. It is not our portion; it is not what our creator destined for us)

She also used the opportunity to reaffirm her commitment to Kolawole. Commenting on one of her husband’s Instagram posts, Toyin wrote, “Oko Toyin. Forever is the deal.” Her response appeared to put the separation rumours to rest, at least from her side.

Toyin and Kolawole got married in a private traditional ceremony in 2019 after building a relationship through the Yoruba film industry. The couple have since shared glimpses of their family life with their supporters.

Although the actress denied the alleged marital crisis, the episode showed how quickly claims about her private life could become subjects of public conversation.

2. The alleged leaked phone conversation involving Bisgold

Barely a month after the marital rumours, Toyin Abraham was involved in another online controversy, this time over an alleged private phone conversation with a TikTok personality and fan identified as Bisgold.

On Wednesday, October 14, 2026, an audio recording said to be a conversation between the actress and the social media personality began circulating on X, Instagram and other platforms. The recording, reportedly released by blogger Mama Esabod, lasted approximately 11 minutes and 42 seconds. It was conducted mainly in Yoruba and Pidgin English.

The conversation touched on several subjects, including Toyin’s relationship with some of her colleagues, the activities of netizens and the alleged attacks against people close to her.
One of the issues discussed involved actress Kemity, whom Toyin reportedly described as someone she regarded as a daughter.

The speaker attributed to Toyin also expressed concern about fake social media accounts allegedly being used by people claiming to be fans but attack other entertainers. Actor Itele d Icon was also mentioned during the conversation.

However, the most controversial part of the recording involved remarks about Funke Akindele and Iyabo Ojo. During the call, Bisgold reportedly made several disparaging comments about Funke. The recording appeared to capture Toyin laughing along rather than openly cautioning her fan. Iyabo Ojo also came up during the conversation, with Bisgold reportedly suggesting that the actress had not moved past an earlier disagreement. Toyin was alleged to have agreed with the remark.

Another part of the conversation reportedly featured Toyin describing herself as an organic brand in the movie industry, while making comparisons with Funke’s approach to publicity and promotion.
The recording also touched on a personal pregnancy loss, adding another private dimension to the conversation.

How the leaked conversation generated backlash

Following the circulation of the recording, netizens expressed different opinions about Toyin’s alleged comments.

Some criticised the actress for appearing comfortable with a fan making insulting remarks about her colleagues. Others questioned why she would discuss sensitive industry matters during a private conversation with someone she knew through social media. There were also people who defended her, arguing that a private conversation should not have been recorded and circulated without her consent.

The circumstances surrounding the recording subsequently became another subject of discussion. Bisgold reportedly claimed that a friend had secretly recorded the conversation while she was speaking privately with Toyin. She further alleged that the person demanded money from the actress and threatened to release the recording after she refused.

Although Toyin did not directly react to the recording, she reposted influencer Bukky Majek’s post, that defended her.
The controversy also attracted reactions from other entertainers. Actress Foluke Daramola publicly defended Toyin, praising her relationship with younger people and describing her as someone with a wonderful spirit.

Bisgold was also reported to have apologised to Toyin following the controversy.

3. The renewed online rivalry involving Funke Akindele

Funke Akindele & Toyin Abraham

While the leaked conversation brought renewed attention to Toyin’s relationship with some of her colleagues, another development towards the end of October placed her and Funke Akindele at the centre of fresh online comparisons.

The two actresses, who are among Nollywood’s prominent filmmakers, have repeatedly had their careers, achievements and movie promotions compared by supporters.

Their upcoming December releases added another dimension to the conversations. Funke was preparing to release The Four: No One Fights Alone, while Toyin was promoting her film Bestie. The movies were scheduled to arrive in cinemas five days apart, with Funke’s film set for December 11 and Toyin’s for December 16, 2026.

As the promotional activities gathered attention, supporters of both actresses began scrutinising their moves, with some interpreting similarities as evidence of competition. Three developments particularly fuelled the conversations: the Adire outfits, the Facebook and TikTok collaboration, and comparisons over their CNN interviews.

The Adire fabric controversy

The actors in customised Adire fabric in 2026

One of the first arguments involved the use of customised Adire fabrics to promote their upcoming films. Funke and some members of her team, including Wumi Toriola, Kemity and Lateef Adedimeji, attended the 40th birthday celebration of KolonyEvents chief executive Nike Akinyemi in matching blue Adire fabric. The fabric carried the title of Funke’s upcoming movie, The Four.

Pictures and videos from the event circulated online, with many people praising the actress for turning a fashion moment into an opportunity to promote her film. However, the conversation changed when Toyin shared a video of herself wearing pink-and-orange Adire fabric bearing the title of her own upcoming movie, Bestie.

The post attracted accusations from some netizens who suggested that she was copying Funke’s promotional style. One critic questioned whether Toyin could develop her own promotional ideas instead of following her colleague’s approach. However, Toyin’s supporters quickly pushed back against the accusation.

Some recalled that the actress had used customised fabrics to promote her 2023 film, Malaika, long before the latest discussion involving Funke’s movie. The actress’s Adire designer also responded to the criticism, disputing the suggestion that the design had been copied and maintaining that the outfit had been planned earlier.

The disagreement eventually became another argument between fans of the two actresses, with each side defending its favourite.

The Facebook and TikTok partnership debate

Toyin Abraham (TikTok collab) | Funke Akindele (Facebook partnership)

Another development involved the actresses’ activities on major social media platforms. On October 29, 2026, Funke announced a partnership with Facebook to promote her upcoming film, The Four: No One Fights Alone.

The actress shared the news on Instagram, expressing excitement about the arrangement and the opportunity to take her film to a wider audience. She wrote:

“We’re taking The Four to the world, and Facebook is coming with us. I’m so excited to announce my partnership with Facebook for The Four: No One Fights Alone! The love you’ve shown me and my stories over the years has brought us this far. Now, let’s make this next chapter one to remember.”

According to Funke, the partnership would give audiences access to different aspects of the film’s journey, including production activities, promotional campaigns, premiere moments and behind-the-scenes content. The announcement attracted congratulatory messages, but it also triggered comparisons with Toyin.

Some netizens suggested that Toyin would soon follow Funke by announcing a similar partnership with Facebook. However, Toyin took to Instagram on October 30 to share a throwback post about her previous experience with TikTok while promoting Oversabi Aunty.

The actress described the experience as memorable and expressed interest in more collaborations as she prepared for the release of Bestie. She wrote:

“Throwback to when TikTok collaborated with OVERSABI AUNTY! It was such a beautiful experience, and I’m looking forward to more amazing collaborations as we gear up for BESTIE. More magic, more creativity and bigger moments ahead! Anyway, Fam, are you ready?”

The post immediately generated reactions, with some accusing her of deliberately drawing attention to her previous TikTok experience following Funke’s Facebook announcement. Others defended Toyin, arguing that she had every right to revisit an earlier professional achievement.

The picture and clip Toyin shared was from TikTok’s #WhatToWatch Cinema Experience, which took place on December 17, 2025. The event brought together filmmakers, actors and content creators to discuss the relationship between social media and cinema. Toyin participated in the gathering and spoke about using TikTok to promote films.

Also, Meta, Facebook’s parent company, publicly confirmed its partnership with Funke to promote The Four. The arrangement covered the film’s London and Lagos premieres and promotional activities designed to connect the actress with audiences and content creators.

This meant that the two activities were not exactly the same, despite the comparisons being made online. Nevertheless, the discussion continued, with supporters of both actresses defending their respective promotional strategies.

The CNN interview comparisons

Funke Akindele (2026,2017) | Toyin Abraham (2023) CNN interviews

The online comparisons did not end with the Adire outfits and social media partnerships. When Funke’s interview with CNN’s Larry Madowo appeared around October 30, 2026, supporters of both actresses began comparing their international media appearances.

Funke’s interview generated excitement among her supporters, who celebrated the opportunity for the actress to discuss her career and achievements on an international platform.

However, Toyin’s supporters responded by circulating her 2023 CNN Africa interview, pointing out that she had also been interviewed by the international news organisation.

Funke’s supporters countered by recalling her earlier appearance on CNN Africa in 2017, arguing that her international media exposure predated Toyin’s.
The exchange generated another round of arguments over who had achieved greater international recognition and whose career had made more progress. Rather than remaining a discussion about their individual achievements, the comparisons once again became a source of rivalry between their supporters.

Their upcoming films add to the competition

Bestie | The Four

Beyond the individual arguments, the actresses’ December movie releases also kept the conversations alive.

Funke’s The Four: No One Fights Alone was scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 11, while Toyin’s Bestie was set for December 16. The five-day difference between their release dates gave fans another reason to compare their promotional strategies and anticipate their box-office performances.

The renewed discussions also brought back memories of previous movie competitions involving the actresses. In 2024, Funke released Everybody Loves Jenifa, while Toyin promoted Alakada: Bad and Boujee. Their films attracted considerable attention during the festive cinema season, with netizens debating their performances and cinema arrangements.

Although allegations of behind-the-scenes competition and unfair treatment circulated at the time, such claims were not established. The latest comparisons have therefore added another chapter to the public conversations surrounding the two actresses.

Importantly, much of the recent back-and-forth has been driven by fans interpreting their activities and comparing their achievements. Neither actress has publicly established that the other is deliberately copying her.

Toyin Abraham’s lawyers issue a cease-and-desist notice

Toyin Abraham’s cease-and-desist notice

On Thursday, November 5, 2026, Toyin Abraham shared a cease-and-desist notice from Whitestone Solicitors and Consultancy, signalling a legal response to what her lawyers described as false, misleading and defamatory publications about her.

The notice, dated November 5, was signed by Tope Salami, Esq., who identified the law firm as the actress’s legal representatives.

Toyin accompanied the document with a short caption addressed to the public. “To Whom It May Concern: Please take a moment to read this carefully. Love you all,” she wrote.

Unlike a statement addressing one particular person, the notice was directed at the general public, with special attention to bloggers, social media users, content creators and influencers.

Titled Publication and Circulation of False, Misleading and Defamatory Statements Against the Person of Toyin Abraham Ajeyemi, the document stated that the actress’s lawyers had become aware of publications and narratives concerning their client which they considered untrue, misleading and capable of damaging her professional image, personal integrity and goodwill.

The solicitors also warned against what they described as malicious publications being circulated by certain individuals through sponsored persons. They urged members of the public to stop publishing, reposting, endorsing or spreading unverified claims about the actress, whether directly or indirectly.

The notice further reminded the public that freedom of expression did not give anyone unrestricted permission to spread false information or unlawfully damage another person’s reputation.

What Toyin’s lawyers are demanding

The notice contained five major demands directed at the public. First, bloggers, influencers and other netizens were asked to immediately stop publishing, sharing or circulating false, defamatory or unverified information about Toyin across all communication platforms.

Second, they were warned against creating or promoting misleading narratives, fabricated allegations and malicious insinuations intended to ridicule, harass or damage her reputation.

Third, the solicitors demanded the removal of existing publications, posts, videos, comments and other content containing false or defamatory statements about the actress.

Fourth, the public was asked to refrain from using social media or other communication channels to encourage harassment, cyberbullying, intimidation or attacks against Toyin or her business.

Finally, the notice stated that future commentary about the actress should be factual, responsible, fair and supported by verifiable information.

The solicitors also warned that anyone who continued to publish, circulate, endorse or amplify false and defamatory statements after receiving the notice could be held legally responsible. They added that relevant publications, posts, comments, videos and other digital materials could be preserved as evidence for possible legal proceedings.

The notice ended with an appeal for members of the public to exercise restraint, verify information before publication and refrain from spreading falsehoods. However, it did not identify the specific individuals, posts or publications responsible for the alleged defamatory statements.

Toyin Abraham and her relationship with public criticism

Toyin Abraham

Over the years, Toyin Abraham has built a strong public presence through her work as an actress, filmmaker and entertainer.
Her career has also placed her in the middle of different public conversations, some involving her professional achievements and others concerning her private life.

The actress has frequently used social media to communicate with fans, promote her projects and respond to issues surrounding her name. Her relationship with her audience has also meant that developments in her life and career often attract considerable attention.

The recent marital rumours, alleged leaked conversation and renewed comparisons involving Funke Akindele have once again shown how quickly online discussions can grow around her. While some conversations involve legitimate criticism and public interest, others can cross into unverified allegations and personal attacks.

Her latest legal move appears to be an attempt to draw a clearer boundary around what she and her representatives consider unacceptable publications. For an actress whose career depends partly on public perception and professional goodwill, protecting her reputation is an important concern.

At the same time, the attention surrounding the notice highlights the responsibility that comes with discussing public figures, particularly in an era when information can travel across several platforms within minutes.

Conclusion

The relationship between celebrities and their audiences continues to change as social media gives people more access to public figures and more opportunities to discuss their lives. For entertainers, the attention can create opportunities to connect with supporters and promote their work. It can also bring conversations they may not always welcome.

As Toyin Abraham takes a legal position on publications concerning her reputation, the wider conversation about celebrity, criticism and responsibility remains one worth watching.
