- Just when it seemed like Chidimma Adetshina’s troubles with South African authorities had finally cooled off, a fresh storm has erupted, this time, striking at the heart of her family.
- In a stunning pre-dawn raid, her mother was detained, setting the internet ablaze with news of a deeper, more sinister twist to this ongoing saga.
The storm surrounding Nigerian-South African beauty queen and Miss Universe Nigeria titleholder, Chidimma Adetshina, has escalated once again, this time dragging her own mother, Anabela Rungo, into the legal crossfire.
In a high-stakes operation, South Africa’s Home Affairs Department, backed by SAPS, arrested Rungo in Cape Town in the early hours of Saturday, February 15.
This development follows reports that Chidimma Adetshina was seen in Cape Town just days ago, despite having her South African documentation revoked in 2024 after the Miss South Africa controversy.
Authorities had also withdrawn Rungo’s documentation in September 2024, citing fraudulent acquisition, making her continued stay in the country illegal.
On Saturday, 15 February, Home Affairs has confirmed in an official statement that Rungo’s arrest is part of an ongoing investigation into further potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct.
They wrote;
“In an apparent act of brazen disregard for the legal consequences of her conduct, it appears that Ms Rungo has defined her ‘undesirable’ status through her Mozambican passport.
“Investigations are ongoing into further potential misrepresentation and fraudulent conduct.
“During the operation this morning, investigators from the Counter Corruption and Immigration Services branches of the department also found Adetshina’s under-aged child residing with Rungo,”
The statement further revealed that after Home Affairs prosecutes Ms. Rungo for her apparent illegal stay in Mzansi, she will be handed over to the SAPS.
She is also under investigation by the Directorate for Priority Crime and the SAPS Child Protection Unit, with authorities focusing on safeguarding the interests of the under-aged child found in her care.
News of Anabela Rungo’s arrest was broadcast on television, sending shockwaves across Mzansi and igniting intense public reactions.
