Veteran Yoruba Actor Segun Remi, popularly known as Chief Kanran, reportedly dies

The Nigerian movie industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of veteran Yoruba actor Segun Remi, fondly called Chief Kanran.

The celebrated thespian, whose career spanned decades in stage, television, and film, reportedly passed away on the morning of Friday, August 15, 2025, after a brief illness.

The heartbreaking news reportedly first surfaced through a Facebook post by film producer Tunde Ola Yusuf, who paid tribute to the late actor with the words: “Good night Chief Segun Remi (Kanran) is dead, may God rest his soul among the righteous…”

Moments later, entertainment blogger Seun Oloketuyi confirmed the report via Instagram, stating: “Popular Actor Segun Remi popularly known as Chief Kanran died Friday morning. Details soon.”

While the exact cause of death has not yet been made public, close industry sources disclosed that the actor had been battling a short illness prior to his passing.

His death marks yet another painful loss for the Yoruba movie sector, which has in recent years bid farewell to several seasoned performers who helped shape the industry’s golden era.

Chief Kanran, aged 73, was widely celebrated for his commanding stage presence, unique delivery, and mastery of traditional Yoruba storytelling. He featured prominently in numerous television series, home videos, and stage plays, earning a reputation as one of the most versatile performers of his generation.

Beyond his screen performances, Segun Remi was also known for his deep understanding of cultural nuances, which he skillfully infused into his roles, making him a respected figure among peers and audiences alike.
