The Sokoto state government has shut down Government Girls College, Mabera, following a cholera outbreak.

The state commissioner for science and technology, Kulu Haruna made the announcement on Friday after the state confirmed that the strange disease that infected students of the school is cholera.

Haruna said the move was in order to curtail the spread of the disease and address the situation.

According to her, the number of students infected has increased to 70.

The commissioner added that only 20 students are currently at the isolation centre and will remain in the school until they are stabilised while the others have been treated and discharged.

She also noted that no teacher has been infected while refuting claims that the school operated under unhygienic conditions.

She also disclosed that more health workers have been deployed to address the situation.
