A man, Tanju Acar, has allegedly fatally stabbed his wife after posing as another man to try and show she was being unfaithful.

The 32-old-year-old man from the south-western Turkish province of Mugla, allegedly came up with the scheme after his wife demanded a divorce.

According to Daily Star UK, Acar stabbed mum-of-two Selvan Acar, 25, in the back on December 8, 2020, with the blade piercing her heart, prosecutors claim.

Prior to the attack, Acar learned that infidelity was a mitigating circumstance for murder under a local law – and could get him a reduced sentence.

He then posed as another man and sent texts to his wife, also getting friends to message her.

Acar discussed the plan with his cellmate, according to the Fethiye Public Prosecutor’s Office.

They have now demanded the maximum sentence for Tanju Acar of an aggravated life sentence for “deliberate murder of a spouse”.

A life sentence in Turkey equates to 24 years in prison, while an aggravated life sentence was introduced to replace the death penalty.

Prisoners serving them can only be paroled after serving at least 36 years, or 40 years if given more than one sentence.

Selvan’s mother, Cemile Kaya, whose testimony is included in the indictment, claimed that Tanju followed, disturbed, threatened and battered her daughter.

According to the report of local news outlet NTV’s report, Tanju would tell her: “It may not be today, but one day I will kill you for sure.”

Fatih Tahanci, the lawyer for the mum, said: “The fact that the defendant told another convict the whole case revealed that he killed his wife by planning it in a cold and calculating way that deserves the maximum punishment.”

The date of the next hearing has not yet been announced.
