A student activist and a former student of the Lagos State University, Yusuf Nurudeen, popularly known as Omomeewa, has been shot dead.

Eyewitnesses said the gunmen went away with his bag containing his phone and other valuables.

His murder was confirmed in a statement by the LASU Students’ Union on Thursday.

WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that the activist, who got married about six months ago, was shot dead around LASU U-turn, Iba road.

The students’ union in the statement by its president, Badmus Uthman, and Public Relations Officer of the Union, Olusola Kolawole, said robbers killed the activist.

The activist had recently appeared before the school’s disciplinary committee over unlawful possession of university documents among others.

The statement read, “The Lagos State University Students’ Union is so sad to announce the demise of our dear Unionist and Activist, the Founder of Educational Right Campaign known as Comr. Yusuf Nurudeen Alowonle (Omomeewa).

“Omomeewa was an activist of Human & Student Rights and also a graduate of Lagos State University(Set of 2019). He graduated from the Department of Educational Management, Faculty of Education.

“Nurudeen contested for the post of Lagos State University Students’ Union President in the 29th LASUSU Election but lost. He was a strong activist who has never been found guilty of any form of illegal activities.

“On the 18th of August 2021, Nurudeen (Omomeewa) and a staff of Lagos State University known as MAJEK were robbed at gunpoint around 10 pm close to the U-turn of LASU.

“It was gathered that both of them were shot. Mr. MAJEK sustained an injury and has been hospitalised at the school clinic.

“When the union was informed this evening. The Union proceeded to the school clinic to get some facts from MAJEK and he confirmed that his bag was collected including his phone.

“Later, the Union checked all the hospitals around including Police stations and it was there we were informed that Nurudeen is dead and that his body is at Mainland hospital.

“The Lagos State University Students’ Union mourns the death of a comrade, brother, and leader!”

Before his death, Nurudeen said he was probed by the LASU management because of his opposition to anti-student and anti-worker policies.

“As everyone would recall, there has been an attempt to frame me up on a case of admission racketeering. This is retribution for my principled opposition to the anti-student and anti-worker policies of the University administration in my capacity as a leading member of the Education Rights Campaign (ERC) and a renowned student activist on campus,” Nurudeen earlier wrote in a press release.

In another sad story, a woman has been shot dead near the same Lagos State University (LASU) gate.

She was killed on Wednesday about 5am while on her way to the morning market at Iyana-Iba.

The assailants shot her after collecting her bag and other belongings.
