One of the kidnapped lecturers of the Abia State University (ABSU), Uturu, Don Chris Afulike of the Department of Mass Communication has reportedly regained his freedom.

Afulike and another lecturer, Rev. Professor S. O. Eze of the Department of Industrial Chemistry and a Methodist Minister were among others kidnapped by gunmen while travelling to Item in Bende local government area of the state for a prayer camp meeting.

Afulike, The Nation gathered, was reunited with the family after he escaped from the kidnappers’ den.

A source, who pleaded anonymity said the lecturer found his way to Ihube Okigwe before help could come his way to unite with his family.

According to the source, the Mass Communication lecturer escaped the camp of the kidnappers den in the middle of the night while they were asleep.

“We learnt that they were kept around Okigwe as he was said to have found his way to Ihube Okigwe after he escaped from their custody.

“We haven’t been able to reach him, but he (Afulike) has been reunited with his family,” the source said.

Professor S. O Eze is said to still be in the custody of the abductors.

It was not clear if any ransom has been demanded by the kidnappers for the release of the victims.

Soldiers from 143 Ranger Battalion acting on intelligence were able to rescue five female victims shortly after the ABSU lecturers and others were kidnapped on Friday.

The Public Relations Officer of the school, Mr. Chijioke Nwogu could not be reached at the time of filing the report.

A source in the school who pleaded anonymity was positive that the Industrial Chemistry Professor would regain his freedom.
