Flooding: Kano evacuates 1,000 trucks of waste in 17 days

The Kano State Government has evacuated over 1,000 trucks of refuse in 17 days as part of the Mass Environmental Clean Campaign by Governor Umar Abdullahi Ganduje.

The State Commissioner for Environment, Dr Kabiru Ibrahim Getso, said while flagging off planting of one million trees campaign in the state on Thursday, that the evacuation of refuse has highly reduced the menace of flooding in the city.

The Commissioner explained that the 2021 Tree Planting Campaign with the theme, ‘Mitigating Climate Effects and Achieving Beautification in Kano’, is meant to checkmate the indiscriminate felling of trees in Kano, which resulted in a maximum temperature of 44 Degrees Celsius last year 2020.

Getso noted that last year, the state was compelled to plant over two million trees in an effort to reduce the excessive high in temperature, “because the move has tremendously worked, we are in this year 2021 Tree Planting Campaign, going to plant one million trees at some strategic places”.

He said this year’s campaign is designed to cover two weeks and has been divided into phases, the first phase will cover communities, state major roads, and some institutions, while the second phase will be launched by the Governor sometime next week.

Speaking further, the Commissioner stated that the state has keyed into the National Great Green Wall Project and already they have provided funds and lands for the establishment of community tree nurseries and plantations in the state.

In the same vein, Kano is actively participating in the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project, and already the government has provided N500 million as well as an Office Complex for the state project management unit.

The State Commissioner for Environment explained that they have promulgated the state policy on the environment in order to give Policy directions for the Environmental sector.

He added that “we have drafted the state pollution control Bill as well as State Forestry Bill to enforce compliance to environmental laws, and to enforce the law we have recruited 1,000 Sanitation Vanguards to police our environment.”
