Some unknown gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen, Saturday evening reportedly kidnapped a yet-to-be-determined number of students of the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU) Abia State and robbed many passengers and motorists en-route to Owerri from Enugu and from Okigwe town to Abia, respectively.

WITHIN NIGERIA learnt that four students of Marist Comprehensive Academy, Uturu were reportedly hit by the suspects stray bullets around Ihube road in Okigwe Local Government Area, Imo State.

Three students, who are between the ages of 14 and 16, sustained different degrees of injuries while one was confirmed dead in the course of the robbery attack.

WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the surviving three are still receiving treatment at the moment.

An eyewitness told newsmen that there were other travellers who also ran into the gunmen but it is not yet clear the actual number of persons whisked away by the yet-to-be apprehended herdsmen.

A university source who pleaded anonymity said the victims ran into the bandits who began to shoot sporadically, thus forcing the vehicles in which the victims were travelling to a halt.

He said ABSU management is currently monitoring the incident.

The Imo State police spokesman Michael Abattam, when contacted, confirmed the incident.

Abattam said the incident is a robbery attack not kidnapping. He assured that investigations are in top gear to fish out perpetrators.
