Maria Igbinedion, the mother of a former Governor of Edo State, Lucky Igbinedion, would be buried on December 10, 2021.

The 85-year-old died on the 2nd of December.

According to the funeral programme released by the family on Saturday in Benin, a service of songs will hold on December 9, between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., at No. 5, Adolo Street, by Water Resources, off Ugbor Road in Benin.

The funeral service scheduled for December 10 will begin from 10 a.m at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Ukhegie, by Ice Road, while reception will take place the same day at 1 p.m., at Crown Heights Pavilion Event Centre, Country Home Road, both in Benin, with all COVID-19 protocols to be strictly adhered to.

Earlier on Saturday, there were claims on social media that Madam Maria Igbinedion, was either strangled to death or suffocated with a pillow by her housemaid, who is said to be on the run.

However, attempts to the Edo Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bello Kontongs to comment on the claim proved abortive. He did not take his call or respond to a message sent to him.

Edo Governor, Godwin Obaseki and PDP top shot, Kenneth Imasuagbon commiserated with Chief Lucky Igbinedion on the death of his mother.

Obaseki said, “I am saddened by the sad news of the passing of your dearly beloved mother, Mrs. Maria Oredola Igbinedion. Mama was loving and compassionate, giving herself freely to causes she cared deeply about and worked assiduously to make society better for all.

“She was a great mother, a loving wife and a conscientious community leader. Her kindness and warmth shone through her charitable endeavours and commitment to uplifting members of her immediate community.

“Mama would be remembered for her wise counsel, charming character and love for God.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Edo State, I extend heartfelt condolences to His Excellency, Dr. Lucky Igbinedion, the Igbinedion family, friends and associates over Mama’s passing and pray that God will grant all, the fortitude to bear this irreparable loss.”

Imansuangbon said, “Mama Governor,” as the deceased was called in her lifetime, was a rare breed. Madam Maria Oredola Igbinedion was a good mother, wonderful mentor and caregiver not only to her children, but to many others that came in contact with her.

“From my experience in my relationship with some of Mama’s children: Lucky, Bright and Charles, it shows that they are well brought up and derive joy in impacting positively on mankind.

“My prayer is that her children continue to flourish in their endeavours, while they carry on where she left, even as they bear the weight of the irreparable loss.”
