South East unrest: Slain pregnant woman Fatima, 4 kids buried in Anambra

The interment of the pregnant woman killed alongside her four children has taken place in Anambra State.

Gunmen suspected to be members of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) murdered them in cold blood at Isulo, Orumba North Local Government Area of the state, on Sunday.

Sarki Kabiru Bakari, leader of the Hausa Community in Orunba South of Anambra, announced the burial of the bodies on Wednesday.

In an interview with told Daily Trust, Bakari said that the corpses of the victims were recovered on Tuesday evening.

He, however, disclosed that plans to transport the remains to their hometown in Adamawa were discarded because of the state of the bodies.

“We have now decided to bury them in Awka Wednesday (today). The mortuary attendant did not treat the corpses, no preservation measure was done; hence we cannot travel with the corpses as they have already started decomposing. We have no other option than to take them to Awka and bury them there,” he said.

Bakari added that the security personnel had been deployed in the area and that the Anambra State police commissioner has visited them and assured them of swinging into action.

“But after we bury the victims, we will all relocate to our hometown in the North; we are no longer safe here. The husband of the woman will also relocate back to Adamawa as soon as he has buried his family; he is working here as a security guard,” he said.

The incident opened a shocking and frightful episode in the wave of violence that’s plagued the beleaguered south east for years on end as unknown gunmen unleash terrors on hapless citizens and constituted authorities, like police and military.
