The Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum Chairman, Aminu Tambuwal, has resigned from his chairmanship position.

Tambuwal, who is also the Sokoto State Governor, announced his resignation at ongoing Board of Trustees meeting in Abuja.

His resignation follows that of Walid Jibrin, the chairman of the party’s board of trustees, earlier in the day.

The resignation is not unconnected to the internal strife rocking the party which is engendered by the dispute between party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, and Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike.

The party has been embroiled in crisis since the completion of its presidential primary election as Wike felt shortchanged. The situation aggravated after Atiku ignored Wike and picked Delta state governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as his running mate.

Tambuwal is at the heart of the crisis after the chairman of the party, Iyorchia Ayu, claimed he was the hero of the presidential primary election because he stepped down for Atiku. The statement infuriated Wike, who was already seething from the loss of the election, setting the foundation for the strife that now threatens the party’s chances at next year’s polls.
