The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) yesterday said it had uncovered plots by some politicians to truncate next year’s general elections by compromising the devices being used by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
The coalition specifically said a quick check on the website of INEC revealed that foreign names have flooded the register in thousands, adding that delisting those names as it has already been done by the electoral umpire was enough, and that those responsible should be dealt with.
Addressing journalists in Abuja, the spokesman of CUPP, Ikenga Ugochinyere, warned that leaving those responsible for BVAS’ compromise by releasing its passcodes during the just-concluded Continuous Voters Registration process may dent the image of the commission.
“First, we commend the INEC chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu and the commission for the bold step of internal cleansing of the voters’ register which they have commenced using the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS).”
Daily Trust reports that opposition parties represented at the briefing included PDP, Action Alliance, APGA, APP and three others.
