The two German shepherds guarding a Catholic church have been killed after biting a passerby, Hashiru Isah, to death in the Abule Egba area of Lagos State.
WITHIN NIGERIA had reported that the unguarded dogs were said to have left the church premises and strayed onto the street, where they attacked Isah and bit him in different parts of his body while on his way home around 11.30pm on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.
According to PUNCH, a community leader, who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of being harassed, said some Hausa men, who were enraged by the death of their tribesman on the day of the incident, hunted down the dogs and killed them.
The source said the dogs escaped out of the church’s premises because the church’s gate was faulty.
He said, “On that night, the tribesmen of the Hausa man that was bitten to death killed the two dogs. On the second day, the case was reported at the Oke Odo Police Station and the man guarding the dogs was arrested.
“The next day, the man guarding the dogs was released. We don’t know what really transpired; the dogs are not missing, they have been killed.
“But the question is why was the man guarding the dogs released? Policemen came into the community in the middle of the night and started arresting people.”
The community leader said after Isah was attacked, he was rushed to two hospitals, but was rejected, adding that he died while being rushed to the Orile Agege General Hospital.
In his reaction to the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, had said the case file was still open.
He noted that the victim’s family had refused to show up at the station after collecting the body for burial.
