The Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki, has lifted the ban on the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) and others across all state-owned tertiary institutions.

The Secretary to the State Government, Osarodion Ogie, who disclosed this in a statement said the lifting of the ban was due to the restoration of normalcy to the various tertiary institutions in the state, particularly the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

The statement read, “The Edo State Governor, His Excellency, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the suspension of the ban on union activities across all state-owned tertiary institutions.

“The lifting of the suspension, which takes immediate effect, is due to the restoration of normalcy to the various tertiary institutions in the state, particularly the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma.

“By this notice, all affected unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Congress of University Academics, Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, Senior Staff Association of Nigeria Universities, Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics, Non-Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and all allied unions operating across the state-owned tertiary institutions are urged to embrace responsible unionism.”

Ogie added, “The Governor Obaseki-led administration is conscious of the role of education in driving economic growth and advancement and remains committed to sustaining the investment and reforms across all levels of education, working with all relevant stakeholders.

In June, 2022, the state government had, following a protest by students of the Ambrose Alli University, over the lingering strike by ASUU, ordered the suspension all union activities across all the state-owned institutions of higher learning.
