A trigger-happy police inspector has been arrested for allegedly killing a passerby at a checkpoint in Taraba State.

The police inspector was alleged to have shot his victim dead around 4:pm on Monday, April 3, 2023, in Sibre village, Ardo-Kola Local Government Area of the state.

The state Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Usman, who confirmed the incident in a statement on Tuesday, April 4, said the Commissioner of Police, Yusuf A. Suleiman has ordered the arrest and detention of the inspector.

“The Command received information that a police inspector who was on routine duty at a checkpoint in Sibre village at the outskirts of Jalingo used his rifle and shot a gentleman who was passing by the checkpoint,” the PPRO stated.

“The Commissioner of Police immediately ordered his arrest. The Inspector and his colleagues posted to the checkpoint were all arrested and handed over to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the command for clinical investigation.”

The PPRO who noted that the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Alkali Baba Usman, has directed that police officers who wrongfully use arms on innocent citizens should be compelled to face the wrath of the law, said the command is working round the clock to unravel the rationale behind the shooting after which the culprit will be arraigned in court.
