Five children, 11 others burnt to death in Osun

Five children were among 16 victims killed in a road accident after two vehicles collided at Ode-Omu along Gbongan-Osogbo road on Friday evening.

It was gathered that the incident involved a Lexus car coming from the Gbongan axis and a commercial bus heading towards Gbongan from Osogbo.

Eyewitnesses said the two vehicles collided and the bus veered off the road somersaulting before it catches fire.

One of the witnesses, Kareem Isau, Chairman National Union of Road Transport Workers, NURTW, said the incident happened around 5 pm on Friday but the victims did not get help on time.

He said the vehicle caught fire because there is a gas cylinder in the bus, adding that the fire rages for over an hour before it was put out.

According to him, four persons escaped, including a corps member and security operatives while others perished in the inferno.

Confirming the incident, Confirming the incident, Osun Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, spokesperson, Agnes Ogungbemi said one of the vehicles carried gas which exploded during the collision and resulted in the fire outbreak.

Also, the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem said 16 burnt victims, which include five children were evacuated from the scene.

“One victim was identified by the family and we handed over the body to them, while the remaining 15 bodies were taken to Osun State University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo.

“The injured victims were taken to a hospital in the town for treatment”, he said.
