Rescuers have recovered the bodies of the three medical students who went missing after a boat conveying them and their colleagues capsized in the Calabar waterways on Saturday.

Within Nigeria had reported how the boat conveying 14 fun-seeking medical students from marina resort in Calabar to Oron beach in Akwa Ibom capsized shortly after the journey began.

However, while 11 of the students were rescued alive on Saturday three of their colleagues were not.

But the search for them continued throughout Sunday afternoon when it was believed that the bodies would float after 24 hours from when they were drowned until early Monday morning.

Speaking on Monday with newsmen at the Marina Resort in Calabar, Commissioner of Police in the state, Gyogon Augustine Grimah, disclosed that the bodies have been found and retrieved.

Grimah hailed the local divers for assisting the police in the recovery of the bodies.

“When the bodies were sited, our marine police rose to the scene, with efforts from the local divers, the bodies have been recovered.

“Three students were missing and we did not rest since that day. The rescue effort continued day and night and this morning we are here to let you know that the bodies have been recovered and you can see them around me.

“The locals did a very marvellous job and they have just delivered the three bodies to us.” Grimah said.

The police boss added that the state government and the police have already taken measures to safeguard lives and property in the area.

Meanwhile, Governor, Prince Bassey Otu has directed the immediate shutdown of the resort and questioning of the management over standards and safety.
